I know many people write of how great Georgetown's location is in terms of activities in DC. Are there many school or club sponsored activities on campus like movies? Or do most students go into DC for nighttime and social activities? In other words, what do students do on weekend nights? Thanks for any input you have.

I’m not sure if people don’t know or if there just are very few school-sponsored activities on campus. I get the impression there are not.

Our son is a sophomore and is involved in numerous activities. There are dozens if not hundreds of various clubs and activities on campus. They range from athletics to politics to community action to theater and arts and the list keeps going. Check them out on their website at [Student Clubs and Activities - Georgetown University](http://www.georgetown.edu/campus-life/students-clubs-and-activities/index.html)

And in addition to all of the on campus activities, there are all of the attractions and activities throughout Washington.

I went to an accepted students reception today and they said on one of the first weekends of the semester over a hundred clubs set up stations on the main lawn and you go around to all of them and get info and sign up.

Thanks, I wasn’t actually wondering about clubs of which there are plenty, but activities that the college might sponsor at night on weekends. I found a website to “something after dark” (I forget the exact wording) which indicated some activities but they seemed few and far between. I wondered if Georgetown expected students to use the DC area for their weekend entertainment of if they provide activities on campus. Like is there a movie theatre on campus where movies are shown or are kids expected to go into Georgetown to see a movie?

Freshman here: no, there is no on-campus movie theater (except for on Halloween, when they show The Exorcist, which is set in Georgetown and written by an alum, on the lawn), but there are plenty of activities. Most RAs plan events for the weekends for their floors, including trips to museums and snack nights in the common room. Every weekend there’s some kind of comedy show, concert, play, or other performance going on, and there are also a ton of things to do in the neighborhood, including a movie theater (about 10 minutes from campus) and more restaurants than you can realistically hope to eat at. There are also Hoyas basketball games at the Verizon Center many weekends, which a lot of students attend.

There is, of course, a party scene as well, but it’s far tamer than that of most other schools (even our peer institutions). I get the feeling that you’re not really interested in that, which is definitely fine here - no one looks down on anyone else for not drinking here and, while most students do drink, you won’t feel excluded or anything like that for not doing so. Friends at some other schools tell me that their campuses have parties nearly every night of the week, which is definitely not the case here. Very few people go out on “Thirsty Thursday”, let alone on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Overall, if you’re looking for non-alcoholic weekend activities, Georgetown definitely offers plenty of those.

Thanks, Fossil and everyone, that’s great info.
