Activities your kids are plan to pursue in Summer 2009

Younger daughter will be traveling ( as far as her plans go currently), from India where she is doing volunteer work this spring- to the UK where she hopes to work in a summer camp. Last year, she worked as a counselor after high school graduation at a local summer camp & made a few friends who are from UK.

Older daughter I assume will be working , she currently works in the school system(she lives in another state)- and she probably will be working in summer education programs.

Son will work, and also help w/little sister while mom goes back to work!!!

S1 was fortunate back in October and landed a research gig for next summer. Pay is relatively decent for an 18 yo in academia. Biggest issue will be finding cheap housing. He has a job on campus during the school year to help with current expenses and is doing odd programming work for my employer to help pay for not living at home this summer.

S2 wants a job, to write his Extended Essay, get in shape for football, hang out with his GF and get some of his application essays done.

S is currently looking at both paid and un-paid internships. He is also checking into doing research either locally or out of state.
Bottom line is he needs to work…

D2 has been offered her job back from last summer…working sports camps. D1 is has been offered her job/internship back from last summer but wants another experience. We’ll see what happens!

Addendum: Get him to find multiple GF(s) whom are a little more serious than just friends.

Son is planning to work at a local gardening store,(watering plants, etc.)before spending 2 weeks in a seminar on Chinese culture and language. This will be followed by a 2 1/2 week trip to China with 19 other rising seniors. After that it’s a week at Church camp as a counselor, and then college visits. Makes for a really busy summer, but going to China with friends and without parents and younger sister is too good to pass up!

My DD is not very strong academically. After she decides where she is oing to college, she has agreed to ask if she use CC to meet any general requriements. Not in major, math or foeign language. If she can concentrate on core courses, she will do better.

My daughter worked in retail and took two courses last summer. (We live 20 minutes from the college she attends.) She loved summer classes and wanted to do the same thing this summer.

Her advisor suggested doing an internship instead, so she will apply. If nothing comes of it, she will go back to what she did last summer.

D2 spent her winter break applying for jobs at most of the western National Parks and Monuments. (Dream job: anything at Yosemite. She climbs. 'Nuff said.)

My college Jr D is currently doing a spring semester co-op and apparently will have the option of staying on through the summer. Last summer she had an internship at a different company and the summer before that she stayed on campus to take classes and stay on at her campus job.

My freshman son will probably take a couple of general eds at the local community college this summer to take some of the pressure off during the school year, as a few other posters have mentioned. I hope he also finds a part-time job.

College soph is applying to internships and study abroad programs. If nothing pans out, back home to work and possibly take some language classes at the local U.

HS soph is applying to a couple of summer programs. She doesn’t believe in a Plan B ;).

HS jr. S will be going to China with a school group led by his AP Euro teacher. He is going with his best friend, who is Chinese. :)

College jr D will be staying on campus to do research. Her first summer away. Mom may have a melt-down.

Wow! China! I would love to be that High Schooler. We had no such thing in my dinosaur years. How lucky today’s kids are! This is truly a wonderful way to learn about the World… great preparation to be a politician, businessman, or IR person IMO.
