Activities

Hello everyone,

I was having some trouble filling out the activities portion of the common app. Some instances that come to my mind are:

For reporting hours:
a) Does time spent for transportation count? (Ex. Time spent in buses)
b) How would I report time for a club that I started spending significantly more time after certain year? Do I put down the time spent per week for this more active year while noting participation for both years, or do I average?
c) Would things like band camp, which is just a week during break, entail "participation during break?"

For reporting details, honors won, and accomplishments:
a) Is there a need to further elaborate on the leadership position described on the box directly above this slot?

And there's few more that's escaping me right now, but will probably add later.

Thanks.

a) I would not think it would. It asks for how much time per week you spend doing that activity. Transit time isn’t really “doing” the activity.

b) Take the average. If you barely spent time on that club, then omit the year(s) you didn’t spend much time and just use the time that you spent a lot of time on it.

c) Yes. You participated in it during the break, so you can count it as during the break. But band is probably an all year thing, so I would just select All Year.

a) In most cases, your position will be fine. “President of National Honor Society” will be all colleges need to know. You don’t have much space anyways. Instead of elaborating on the position, elaborate on the activity, if you feel it needs clarification.
