Actor Training Freshman Here!

bisouu - Until I met the faculty at auditions, I wasn’t sold on Hartt. I was really set on a school in the middle of the city, so the college campus didn’t appeal to me. But as soon as I met Alan Rust and Kevin Gray, I KNEW that Hartt is where I belonged. Just the other day I heard Ashley (Ashley Malcolm, our division coordinator) say something that really defined Hartt’s approach to the program. She was talking about how we’re not a cut program, and she said something along the lines of, “You’re investing so much in us. We work for you, you don’t work for us.”

They have the outlook that they owe us for choosing them, and are dedicated to the growth of every single student. The professors just really, really love us. And that was apparent at my audition, so I was sold.

TheaterMom14 - Wonderful! The MT program is excellent. My roommate is an MT and she’s in love with all her classes(:

Times3 - Of course, thank you! I hope Evan is having the time of his life.

How far are you from NYC and can you access the city easily?

Hartt mom here, Bisouu…NYC is about 120 miles from Hartt, but traffic realities make it about 2 1/2 hours on a bus. There are lots of buses and it’s easy to go in for the day. Same with Boston. Schedules complicate that though-- if you’re in rehearsal (and you usually are) you don’t have Saturday off.

Being 30 miles from LA it can take us that long to get into the city too! LOL

Eve…can you take more classes if you wanted to? Could you take a dance class or an additional theater class?

I’ll answer Bisouu and hope Eve will chime in with a student perspective too. D is auditing an extra ballet class and singing lessons (which cost extra). There aren’t really other theater classes to take because each year takes its classes as an ensemble. Anyone is welcome to help in the shop, building sets, etc. And last year D took a great academic theater class. She could only do that because she had a lot of AP credit, though, so not as many required courses to get through.

My D has a lot of AP credits too. I am sure these kids are super busy, just wondered if they could take more classes if they wanted to.

Sorry I can’t respond quicker!

Everything Gwen said is spot on. I know of a few people who are auditing extra classes, especially ballet, and if you have AP/SAT scores that test you out of required classes, there’s a lot of tempting academic options. You can also always ask to sit in on rehearsals just to observe, and our technical director Debbie is often offering up small jobs. For instance, tomorrow I’m walking the stage in one of our black boxes for the lighting designer for one of our fall plays!

I’m actually heading to New York this Sunday to see the Broadway production of Romeo & Juliet with Orlando Bloom(: I bought tickets from MegaBus for a round trip price of $25, and I bought those rather last minute, I know a couple of my friends got them for $15. There’s also a lot of excellent student ticket options, so my R&J ticket was just slightly more than $25 - an amazing deal.

Don’t apologize Eve! We know how busy you are. I’m just so appreciative that you are willing to share your experiences! Keep em coming!

OH EVE! Do let us know how the show is. I saw Condola Rashad in The Trip to Bountiful this summer and she was magnificent. She earned every bit of her Tony nomination this year. I’m sure she’ll be equally magnificent as Juliet!

now back to your thread already in progress

I’ll definitely report back!(:
