Well if you are going to say you are hispanic either way California is probably a better chance.

Go back and look at old threads, it is very competitive from NJ. We use to live in NJ many moons ago, my Mom still does, all of her friends grandchildren are trying to apply to UMD and are frightened that they will not get in. NJ has some excellent schools in the nation which gives an edge (The admission board looks at your rank and the school —how many go to Ivies, 4 yrs, etc—going to a school with a lot of kids going to Ivies helps your score).

Also how can you claim either state…you have to choose the 1 you are residing in! Are you going to school in CA and folks live in NY, or vise a verse? Where is your license? If this is a divorce situation, you will be from the state of the custodial parent, which means if 1 parent lives in CA, but you live in NY with the other, you are from NY. Where is your transcript coming from…not sure, but I think that is how they will determine which state.

As far as AA, I do not know, but my guess is since they take federal funding and the Supreme Court already ruled on this re Univ of Michigan they will follow the SC ruling

Finally, even if they use AA, there are tons of minorities from everywhere across the country…and if they are required to select a certain % for AA, you will only get a very small foot up…OOS is @30%, than let’s say 10% of that number goes to AA…(this includes foreigners, i.e. Gibbush) Calculate the numbers only 1200 students out of 4K came from out of state(including international) and if you reserve 10%, only 120 out of 4K are AA. Not sure if you know, but UMDCP had over 28K applicants for 4K slots.

I wouldn’t consider being hispanic a hook. You also might need it, you say you have a 50-50 chance…what are your actual stats? Realize they look at the entire student. Maybe you have lower grades, but work 20 hrs, play sports yr round, involved in leadership at school, take the hardest course load and volunteer hundreds of hrs. You would probably be accepted faster than the kid who has 200 pts higher on the SAT, with a 4.5, but has never done anything, but school.
To them you are a better student because it shows you can juggle and deal with pressure.
