Actual writing questions from the 2005 Oct. SAT

Explanations to these?

11) Intimacy, love and marriage are three different, if interrelated, subjects.

a) different, if interrelated, subjects
b) interrelated subjects, being , however, different
c) different subjects, whereas they are interrelated
d) different subjects when interrelated
e) subjects that are different although being interrelated

Ans: A (why?)

17) When Marie Curie shared the 1903 nobel Prize for Physics with two other scientists-her husband Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel- she had been the first woman to win the prize. No Error

Ans: C.. Why?

21) Most major air pollutants cannot be seen, although large amounts of them concentrated in cities are visible as. No Error

Ans: E...I thought that "..of them..." would be an error, why isnt it?

22) The light emitted by high-intensity-discharge car headlights are very effective in activating the reflective paints of road markers, therby making driving at night safer. No Error

Ans: A...how?

24) The museum is submiting proposals to several foundations in the hope to gain funds to build a tropical butterfly conservatory. No Error.

Ans: D (For this i thought that it would be not "in" the hope but "with" the hope...?

22) Light is a singular subject and thus requires a singular verb, "is".
24) "To gain" is kind of awkward, I believe this is an idiom error?
It should be in the hope "of gaining" not in the hope "to gain".

I would have to pick least worst, which would either be A or E. This is a bad one.

It has to be was. Had been implies that no more women won the prize ever again.

I dont see anythign wrong with them.

shiomi is right in that light is sing.

Since it is in the hope, it can't be to gain. Well this one yoiu could really go by ear.

11) What answer do you think is right? I'll try to explain why that answer is wrong.

17) Should be "When Marie Curie... was the first woman" because the actions of winning the prize and being the first woman are simultaneous.

"Had been" is used when the action is committed before some other action which the time-frame is defined.

Examples:
- When I was born, I was the first child of my mother. - born and first child are the same time
- Before my younger sister was born, I had been enjoying the sole attention of my mother. - enjoying the sole attention is BEFORE sis was born

Try this:
-When Sandy broke the world record, she [fill in the blank] the first Jamaican woman to win an Olympic medal.

21) You copied the question wrongly. It should be "Most major air pollutants cannot be seen, although large amounts of them concentrated in cities are visible as smog."

The subject is "[types of] major air pollutants", which is plural, so it can be referred to as them.

Examples of using them/they:
- Sarah can make many types of delicious cakes. I like them all!
- After downloading the latest games, I decided they were enjoyable.

24) Yes, idiom error. It should be "hope of" gaining funds, not "hope to". "hope of " is a noun, while "hope to ___" is an verb.

Example:
- Sandy works overtime in the hope of earning enough money to retire early.
- Sarah hopes to earn enough money to retire early.

for the first one, you definitely gotta go with whichever one sounds the least wrong, which would be A.

The second one should say "became the first" or "was the first"

for the third, I agree that the question was copied wrong, and if the question was copied correctly, it would be obvious that there is no error.

fourth one, "light" singular and "are" plural don't agree.

fifth, I agree that it should be "hope of" but the above poster forgot to change "gain" to "gaining". It would read "in hope of gaining".
