Actuary

What do students aspiring to be an actuary generally major in at Berkeley? I would assume that it would be a math major with a focus on actuarial science, but when I looked at Berkeley Actuarial League website, most of the officers were majoring in statistics and economics. Why not actuarial science?

Actually, if you look at the statistics and applied math department website, you have to choose 3+ clustered electives and I believe actuarial science is one of them.

There’s no major called Actuarial Science in Cal. But, I think it’s better just to major in a broader subject like Applied Math or Statistics because you can do something else with the degree in case you don’t want to be an actuary in the future. There’s also DeCals that prepare you for the actuary exams so majoring in something other than pure Actuarial Science won’t hinder you one bit.

Ahh…ok it makes more sense now. Thanks for the help.

So, which electives would probably be the most helpful for someone interested in an actuary career? I would think actuarial science, economics, and statistics? But, what about computer science, numerical analysis, and probability theory?
