Anyone on here looking into this program? The deadline was in mid-February and I'm on pins and needles, my fingers crossed, praying, etc etc, that I'll hear good news at the end of this month!

I also applied to this program…there is also one other woman that I recall posting here and there on the boards who is also a prospective Ada.

I am also on pins and needles…luckily the next few weeks are ridiculously busy school-wise for me, so I can spend more time focused on that rather than the appearance of either a fat or thin envelope in my mailbox.

Unfortunately, we go on Spring Break the week before decisions are expected…I’m planning to put more hours into my internship that week than is usual to try to keep my mind from doing the “What if? What if?” dance.

Did any ACs get the email all of the RDs seem to be talking about? I am super anxious and just want to know as soon as possible if I got it. Lol. Thanks.

I haven’t recieved a thing via email or snail mail or otherwise. :(

What is the Ada Comstock scholar program? I’ve never heard of it…

^^ It’s Smith’s program for non-traditionally aged students (which is any student 24 or older, and also includes any student with dependent children). Basically Adas are older students who either never got to go to college for a B.A. or had their B.A. studies interrupted for some reason (there have been Ada graduates (or maybe just one?) for example, who were in college right before World War II, and then left to sreve the war effort, and never were able to go back until they became Adas in their 70s and 80s). Adas take the same classes and have the same requirements as any traditional student (or “trad” as the Smith slang calls them). Some of them live on campus too, either in the regular houses or in special Ada housing.

The program was the brainchild of Jill Ker Conway who was a really beloved Smith president. She came from a poor, rural background in Coorain Australia (really recommend “The Road from Coorain” to future Smithies, by President Conway) and her mother had a really hard life raising a family in a rural setting, not much opportunity. And President Conway apparently always imagined how her mother’s life would have been different, and so much better, if she had been able to get an education that would give her real options and choices about her future.

Some of the other women’s colleges have similar programs now, but I believe the Ada program at Smith was the first.

One addition: women younger than 24 years old who are veterans can apply as an ADA.

Yes, that is true about veterans. Though Ada is not an acronym.

Didn’t intend it to be My apologies to Ms. Comstock.

I would love to know some day who IS Ada Comstock?

[Smith College: Ada Comstock Scholars Program](http://www.smith.edu/ada/history.php)

It’s a brief biography of Ada Comstock herself (a former dean of the college).

Thanks, Borgin, for the biography.

I’d read that a few months ago and was REALLY impressed.

Finally got my email stating they are posting decisions for AC’s on the 30th. I don’t get why they couldn’t post them today with the freshman? It’s not like they’re making any more decisions about acceptance in the next four days, right? Ugh… I really just want to know and be done with it. Lol.

Ada decisions actually take a lot longer than regular first-year decisions. They involve a lot of weighing of personal history, transfer credits, etc. that are more subjective than even the process that first year apps are put to (which is a thorough evaluation just like the Ada process, but weighing other factors). So it takes longer. Annoying maybe, but just the way it is.

Thanks for the explanation S&P. Four days feels like an eternity right now is all. Lol. I’m just being a complainer.

How many Ada prospies are on CC anyway?
Come out, come out wherever you are! :)

I’m an Ada prospect!
