The title says it all^. Will the people reading my essay be aware of major topics prevalent in teen/young people's culture

Basically, would I be able to make a Soulja Boy reference in my essay and assume that whoever reads it will know that it is a well-known dance to a popular quasi hip-hop song?

dude, your killin me...are you in a US High School? I thought everyone knew about cranking the soulja boy. I wasnt using it to show love of music or as a metaphor. It is an integral part of an anecdote in my essay.

Any more opinions? Will the adcoms know about stuff like Soulja Boy. Do most of the people here know about it?

I know soulja boy.He annoys the heck out of me and people at my school were obsessed with him last year. when everyone was doing his dance at a pep assembly, i wanted to puke. sigh American teens

see, exactly ^. American teens were obssessed with him, evry1 at my school did it as well, so I want to include an anecdote similar to the one you described in my essay. Would it be safe to assume that the adcom would know what i was talking about. I don't want him/her to be like "soulja boy?!?!?! what"....if they know what it is, it would make a great addition to my essay.

I'm beginning to think people at CC don't get out much! Naw just playing, i realize that people on here have very contrasting interests and many stray from the teen norm present at the large public high schools which is perfectly fine. Again, any advice is appreciated.

I feel like this would be hard to put into an essay without sounding pompous or condescending towards those who (unfortunately) do enjoy the sounds of Soulja Boy.

no its not condescending at all. i enjoy it myself! trust me, its actually positive to "the sounds of soulja boy", i jus wanted to know if the adcoms would know about the dance and its mass appeal and popularity among teens? I assumed they would because it was huge at pretty much every HS campus in America or so i thought

I am pretty sure they will, because I met some Stanford admissions officers and they looked like they were in their 30s. Plus, they were pretty chill.

Ephermal2: my sentiments exactly! everyone at least knows about it. and most people can do it, its not that hard. thats why it so popular.

jaf1991: but the adcom isnt exactly a random 50 yr old. he is an undergraduate admissions worker. He deals with high schoolers and works at a college campus. wouldnt this make him at least know soulja boy?

Jaf1991: Its SCHOOLsearching, not soulsearching...get it right. lol jp. And seriously, yeh i guess I will think about it and try to re-work it where the anecdote does not rely on the adcom knowing about soulja boy.

They'll probably know the reference somehow. Just prelude it with a little phrase that describes it for people who may recognize it (while nothing comes to mind) and so it makes sense for some of the older ones.
