Hi everyone, I am new to the law school forums but since I'm planning on going to law school I have a question. I went to a workshop a few months ago and there were a lot of law school reps from various schools. I was asking the rep about figuring out my overall GPA since I went to more than one school and two of the reps told me that they add 3 points to my GPA because my undergrad is from Berkeley. That really sounds strange to me because I would think that your GPA should be the same regardless of where you get your undergrad from. They told me that don't look at all schools the same because the curriculum is more difficult at some schools.

I still think that sounds strange and have never heard of that before the workshop. Has anyone ever heard of undergrad schools making a difference on the GPA? Any help would be appreciated.

There are some situations in which it can matter, but 0.3 GPA points is absurdly huge. There's no way a school can matter that much. Furthermore, such bonuses aren't nearly that automatic -- they only matter in some situations -- and finally Berkeley doesn't seem to be one of the schools that gets that kind of a boost, generally speaking.

What school was the rep from?

One was from Cornell and the other was from Boalt.....

I completely agree w/ you, I can't imagine a boost like that so I didn't really take it seriously, especially after trying to research it and not being able to find anything on undergraduate schools mattering.

BUMP

Bumping the post with a question_

not fully understanding the "adding to" GPA comment in terms of "points"- can someone please elaborate?

Also- are any considerations given to GPA and major taken? For example, would a lower GPA with a physics major be viewed the same as a higher GPA with poly-si major, or is the GPA hard and fast irregardless of undergrad major taken?

thanks-

The answer is in between, but it's closer to the "hard and fast" side of things.

The OP was asking whether it was true or not that a GPA from MIT would be viewed as being 0.3 points higher than it actually was -- e.g. a 3.5 would be viewed as a 3.8. My answer was "no." While school and major get SOME consideration, it's fairly minor in the grand scheme of things.
