I put this in my Common Application Addition Info.

I just want admissions officers to understand the fact that I had to work to support my family's rather low income. This massive responsibility has taken up a large part of my time ever since I started in freshman year. My responsibilities became greater over the years; I was skilled labor(electrics, plumbing, carpentry) in the beginning and have since risen to become a project manager, in sales and marketing, and in creation and management of www.g4sconstruction.com. My family's income has taken a fall due to the housing slump and I've had to work even harder, taking up a lot of time I would otherwise devote to studying for my AP classes in addition to extra-curriculars. Although I don't like to make excuses, there's no question that my grades in these classes have taken some damage due to this increased workload, but I've tried my best to keep them up. I just like to say that I'm proud of what I've accomplished; keeping good to outstanding grades (some in AP classes) while working 35 hours a week to support the family. I hope you can keep in mind that had I not had this responsibility, my time would be spent to pursuing FIRST Robotics, other activities, and even lacrosse. I hope to pursue these and more activities at (college)!
