I used the additional information section to write a brief essay (about 300-400 words) explaining why I did one of my ec’s (it was a very intimate humanitarians program while I’m heavily science oriented), and a internship I recently got (I felt I had to explain because it would’ve been a bit odd to say I’ve been doing research without submitting an abstract or rec)
Do you think this is a somewhat appropriate use of the additional info section?
Yes, it’s completely fine.
Don’t fret it.
I did the same thing! You’ve gotta take advantage of any space available to try and get “you” across to admissions. That extra essay could very well make the difference of an acceptance or a rejection. Smart decision on your behalf.
Kudos!
When I spoke with an admissions officer at a UC, they told us not to use that section to submit a “third essay”, because:
- It should only be used for unique circumstances, such as financial hardship, citizenship status, etc
- Submitting a third statement takes the adcom more time to read, therefore slowing the process down, annoying them.
Well, the “additional information” section is for additional information that will help them understand you better. I think what you wrote, and the reasoning behind it, is fine. Good luck.
