Additional Information Section on the Common App

Hi guys,
So one of the reasons I want to transfer from my current university is that I have terrible financial aid. I am only applying to schools that meet 100% need and are need-blind (needless to say, I come from a low-income family and the school I’m at was the only real choice I had). The school also slashed my financial aid after the FA appeal deadline, so I was kind of screwed from the summer. In my application essays, I am writing about my academic reasons for wanting to transfer, which are just as dire as my financial reason. Would it be alright to explain my financial aid situation at my current school while also explaining my family’s financial struggles and explaining that I appreciate what each of these schools do for low-income families? I’m not sure if the AI section is an appropriate place to share this or if transfer admissions officers even care about the financial side of all this. Thank you!

If the lack of funding caused a dip in grades and/or a temporary pause in your studies then by all means mention it. If Just don’t use the area to reiterate anything you said in your Transfer supplement essay. (In that essay, you should definitely mention the cuts you suffered on your financial aid at your current institution, as that’s the main reason you’re transferring.) At the end of the day, the fact will be known to the admission officers. Good luck!

AGoodFloridian, thank you! I’ve actually decided to include this in the additional information section, as I’m trying to keep my transfer essay and supplements more on the academic side, which is a huge part of me wanting to transfer as well, but you’re right that as long as the fact is known to the admissions officers, it should be fine.
