Hello, I'm completing my freshman year in high school and I was wondering if I could get some help some extra stuff that looks favorable on a service academy application. My brother got accepted into West Point and Annapolis this year and will be a plebe at the Naval Academy on July 1st. I know of Boys State, Summer Seminar, and the SAME Scholarship, but I was wondering if there were any other camps or extra curriculum actives that look good on the application. I play 3 sports (2 varsity letters) , I'm apart of the community action program at school, member of the Spanish club, and have a 3.99 GPA (weighted). I also applied to STEM this year but unfortunately I got wait listed..If anyone could help me out if they know any other programs that would be very helpful.

Keep participating in varsity sports. If possible, see if you can become a team captain on a varsity team.

Also, maybe get active in student government; then try to become an officer by your junior year.

Take your ACT and SAT tests as early as you can, AND take both tests at least twice.

Finally, as a backup to USNA, apply for the Naval ROTC scholarship too. Not only is this a great backup plan, but also shows that you are truly interested in the Navy. I know somebody who applied for the Naval Academy, but not the NROTC scholarship, and was rejected by USNA. I wonder if applying for the NROTC scholarship might have given him a few extra points which could have made the difference. Besides, NROTC can send you to some great universities for nearly free, because the scholarship pays for almost everything except room and board costs.

I agree with NROTCgrad! I would add that if you don’t make it into the USNA on your first try…going to college for a year and being involved with NROTC helps your re-application quite a bit. If you are determined to be a Naval Officer then you should pursue all avenues to accomplish your goal. Good Luck!
