For those of you whose students take ADHD medicine, how do u handle refills while they are at school? S can only get a 30 day supply at a time and they won’t mail it. I worry about him being able to get to a pharmacy especially since he won’t have a car on campus. I know he should be taking control but logistically should I refill and mail to him? What do people do in this situation?
Many schools have someone on staff to handle care/scripts for ADHD; many even have limited pharmacies within the school health center. I’d check with his school.
Is his college in the sa.e state as the prescribing doctor? If yes, no problem, have the prescription sent to a pharmacy near the school.
If your son is out of state, big problem – pharmacies won’t accept out of state prescriptions for controlledsubstances. What I did for 2 sons, in 2 different states, was to get the prescription filled at the pharmacy it had always been filled at (local to me) and then I mailed the prescription down to my son. I believe it is technically illegal to do that, but there was no other way to get their meds to them. It would be a poor use of law enforcement resources to prosecute someone for getting their legally prescribed medication in my opinion.
Yes - all of his choices are out of state so that may be an issue
It’s not easy, I’ll agree with other parents! Depending on your state and pharmacy, you may be able to get an out-of-state prescription filled in the new college town. When my kid went from Indiana to Wisconsin, CVS in Wisconsin would fill the prescription written by his doctor in Indiana because my kid had been in its “system.” His doctor would write 3 months of prescriptions that were time specific – one could only be filled that month, one could only be filled the next month etc. That didn’t solve the dilemma – which definitely happened early on – that kid would procrastinate filling and then would realize was out. There were definitely times I did what @cinnamon1212 did – get the prescription filled here and ship it to kid – which since the meds are a controlled substance – is not legal and made me uncomfortable.
Depending on the school, some health services might become the prescribing physician if the student has been evaluated etc.
As an adult, my kid found a clinic which specialized in treating adult ADHD which made the whole system so much more manageable – video consults, email scripts to the pharmacy etc. He paid more for the service, but it was worth it.
My son was in state and his doctor mailed him the prescription. I’ve had 3 at 3 different colleges, I recommend they find a pharmacy and urgent care center before they need it (student health centers are usually closed nights and weekends). Freshmen get sick a lot (at least before covid)
It really depends on the state. CVS in Texas wouldn’t fill my son’s prescription from a CT doctor even though we use CVS at home.
Yes, I’m sure we were able to do it bc the prescribing doctor and filling pharmacy were both in the same region. I called the pharmacy in the college city before we got there, they said they would fill it. We then went in together at move in to confirm with the pharmacy in person.
