Hi,

I am transferring from a community college as a biological sciences major. When I transfer I am going to change my major to molecular and cell biology. I am a hardworking student, I always study, and never procrastinate.

I was wondering how much different the classes are from community colleges... excluding the fact that the university i am transferring to (UCSC) has a different grading scale (with +, -... for example A-...B+) and obviously some of the class sizes will be a great deal larger than what I am used to.

Besides that, is it very hard to adjust from semester to quarter style? And also the amount of work expected from you? Or are they about the same in styles taught, work needed to be completed, etc?

I want to know what should I academically expect once I transfer! Thanks

Well I went from a Tier 1 LAC to CC and now I’m going to UVA in the Fall. I’m not nervous at all. I think the course load at a 4 year university is a little bit heavier but it still isn’t really too difficult to pull good grades if you’re a good writer. (Well I’m speaking from the perspective of an English major anyway)

I have never had an issue with writing. Math is actually the subject I worry about because I need to work slow and do a lot of homework examples. Thank goodness I will be done with calculus before I transfer because that course itself is very time consuming.

Yes, I heard the courses move very fast. My current counselor has mentioned that taking three courses at a university is like taking five or six at a community college. I kind of got worried lolol

I just do not want to get swamped my homework and studying to the point I do not do well (aka C’s). Also, I heard getting a lot of B- grades is equivalent to a 2.7 gpa… which definitely SUCKS for grad school! How worrisome lol

My friend transferred from CC into Rutgers NB (large student body there) and currently has a 3.9. She had a 3.6-3.7 in CC.

So I assume that means the instructors were better!

What is her major? And was she studying 24/7?

I am terrified I won’t be able to workout daily like I do at a CC
