For starters I need to know what a thesis film is and what duration could it be? Thanks in advance.

Hi Rosegold,

I am confused about your inquiry. The subject of your thread is “Admission enquiry for Dodge Film School - Chapman University”. A “thesis film” is a Dodge College senior project attached to classes FTV 430 and FTV 431 Senior Thesis Workshops (see info about these classes at the bottom of this post).

If you are talking about Dodge College undergraduate admissions application’s Supplemental Materials then there is a 2 minute video required for a Film Production Major and an option for a 2 minute video for the Digital Arts Major. Information about all Dodge College’s undergraduate admissions application Supplemental Materials can be found here.

There are many examples of these 2 minute max videos that have been submitted in the pass that can be seen here:

Here are the written requirements for the aforementioned 2 minute max videos.

Film Production Undergraduate Application:

Prompt: Create a self-introductory video essay no more than two minutes in length. Your video should visually highlight something about yourself, your personality, your interests, etc. that is not related to film. The only rule is that you may NOT appear in the video in any way (including any photographs of yourself), so be creative. We are primarily looking for your strengths at conveying a story visually and for evidence of your creativity rather than your technical abilities.

Format: Videos can be as simple or complex as you like but should have a clear story. You do not have to edit this project; it can be one long shot. Video essays can be live action or a slide show of still images or photographs with text and phrases, or a combination. Videos must not exceed a total running time of two (2) minutes.

Digital Arts Undergraduate Application:

Option 2: Introductory Video
Prompt: Create a self-introductory video no more than two minutes in length. As a potential Digital Arts major, we highly recommend using animation (computer graphics, hand-drawn, stop-motion, etc.) or visual effects (models, atmospherics, matte paintings, CG background sets, etc.) in your piece. Your video should visually highlight something about yourself, your personality, your interests, etc. that is not related to film. The only rule is that you may NOT appear in the video in any way (including any photographs of yourself), so be creative.

Sorry for the confusion caused. The idea was to create a thread where I could post any admission or application related enquiry I have.
Thank you soo much for your detailed reply it has certainly cleared some of my doubts.

One doubt rearding the education system terminology: what are credits?

Is there a way I can apply for a scholarship and what is the eligibility criteria for that? Anything that could improve my chances of getting in.

I am a bachelor of mass media graduate from India who wants to apply for a Major in Film Production course.

Thanks and Regards.

Your question: “what are credits?”

Answer: [Course credit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Course credit - Wikipedia)

Hi Rosegold,

I think that you are saying that you want to go to Dodge College Graduate School to achieve a Masters Degree because you already have a bachelor’s degree in Mass Media.

To apply to Graduate School the information to apply can be found here:
[Graduate Application Procedure | Dodge | Chapman University](<a href=“Page Not Found | Chapman University”>Page Not Found | Chapman University)

As you can see Rosegold, there are at least five (5) different majors having to do with Film Production to choose from at Dodge College.

For example if you click on the major Film Production/Cinematography Emphasis the Supplemental Materials to turn in with the application are:

Creative/Scholarly Portfolio List
Upload a one to two page list of activities that demonstrates your creative or scholarly potential in your area of chosen specialization (producing, directing, screenwriting, editing, cinematography, sound design, production design) focusing on creative accomplishments. Applicants to MA Film Studies should focus on scholarly accomplishments. Include in this list specific items that you could submit, if requested, to the Lawrence and Kristina Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. Each listing should include a brief description of the work and your role in its creation.

Example of Portfolio listing (use this format):
Title: Roger’s Car
Position: Writer/Director
16 minutes, Video 2005. Valley College
Log line: Unusual circumstance allows a sixteen-year-old to get his first car. I wrote this story for a creative writing class and produced the film with the help of my friends.

Transformational Moment Essay
Upload to the AY application a two page essay describing a transformational moment in your life.

Cinematography Reel
Cinematography applicants can submit either an entire body of work or a compilation of work, up to 20 minutes.

[Apply - Film Production/Cinematography Emphasis | Dodge | Chapman University](<a href=“Page Not Found | Chapman University”>Apply - Film Production/Cinematography Emphasis | Dodge | Chapman University)

So Rosegold, you would need to choose one of these majors and turn in everything required to apply for it.

If you are not advance enough Rosegold with your Film Production abilities, talents & skills to be able to turn in this required Graduate School application package then you could apply for a second bachelor’s degree to be completed at Chapman U. I am sure that many of the coursers you already took for your Mass Media degree would apply toward graduation from Chapman University; it might only take you 2 and half years to complete your second bachelor’s degree.

There are no secrets in how to get into Dodge College undergraduate Film Production major as a Freshman or a Junior. Just the following three (3) things need to be better than the other applicants that are applying to be accepted & obtain one of the only 70 spots that are available each year:

Take the hardest classes in school and obtain the highest grades that you can.

Take the SAT & ACT tests and get the highest score that you can.

Thank you so much sukhajoy!
If it werent for you I would not have been able to gather so much information in such little time. Every minute is precious right now as I have a lot to work on.
I surely am a little nervous now but i shall keep working towards my goal. I understand that there are a lot of other universities in California but for some reason I have my heart set on Chapman. I will give it my best shot. Let’s see what is in store for me.

Thank you once again for guiding me.

Hi Rosegold,

In case you did not see this before: Admissions Application Information for International students whom want to transfer to Chapman University:

The checklist below is for students who have a foreign passport, are not permanent residents or dual citizens of the United States, and are high school graduates who have completed any college coursework after graduation.

Here’s how you can become part of the Chapman’s thriving international community:
1.Submit your application—the Common Application, the Chapman University Supplemental Application and a $65 application fee — through The Common Application website.
(We will receive your completed application only after you submit all three of these components.)

2.Request a letter of recommendation. Ask someone who knows you well, a core-subject teacher, employer or clergy member, to write a letter of recommendation using the Teacher Evaluation form in the Common Application or by sending the letter on his or her letterhead to Chapman University Office of Admission (address below).

3.Extra/School Forms within the Common Application—None of the extra/school forms in the back of the Common Application are required unless later requested by the Office of Admission once a file is complete. The Secondary School Report, Officials Report, Mid Term Report and Teacher/Instructor Evaluation forms are NOT required.

4.Have official high school transcripts sent to Chapman University Office of Admission. To be considered “official,” transcripts must remain in the envelope that’s been sealed by your high school records office or sent electronically by your high school through Docufide or Naviance.
(We waive this requirement if you have 60 or more college units completed at the time you submit your application to Chapman.)

5.Ensure all SAT or ACT with Writing scores are sent to Chapman University by the testing company. We require results from all your testing attempts; please do not exclude any scores. Chapman’s SAT test code is 4047; our ACT code is 0210. Please note: The last acceptable testing date for Early Action consideration is the early November offering; we highly recommend submitting scores from the October test date or prior to ensure your file completes on time.
(We waive this requirement if you have 24 or more college units completed at the time you submit your application to Chapman.)

6.Submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. If you are a native English speaker or have scores of 550 or higher on either the Critical Reasoning or Writing sections of the SAT or a sub score of 24 or higher on either Reading, English or Writing sections of the ACT, we will automatically waive the TOEFL or IELTS requirement.

7.Send official college transcripts in the envelope sealed by the college records office or have them sent electronically by your institution’s records office. We require official transcripts for all college course work you’ve attempted.

8.Complete additional requirements if you’re a talent major. If you are planning to major in Art, Dance, Film & Media Arts, Music, or Theatre, you need to complete the extra requirements listed for your study area before we can review your application.
