I am currently in class 12. I am an international student. I graduated class 11 in 2015. I took a gap year between class 11th and 12th in year 2015-16 to discover my passion. I wanted to ask if I can apply for 2017? I will be taking my SAT exam on 1st Oct this year. Will a gap year affect my application? I can also apply for Fall 2018. I have no problem with that because I want to get a scholarship. if I apply in 2018, I could also give my SAT Subject Tests and AP’s. So, that would eventually strengthen my chances of being accepted and scholarship both. What do you recommend, applying for 17 or 18?
Yes, you can apply for entry in fall 2017. Why would you not be able to take SAT Subject Tests this fall before the application deadlines? (If you want to apply somewhere that recommends SAT Subject Tests, and you can’t take both the SAT and the SAT Subject Tests due to scheduling conflicts, you could take the ACT instead of the SAT. The ACT is also offered in October and on a different weekend than the SATs.)
International applicants are not expected to take AP exams, unless you are attending an American-style school where AP courses are part of the curriculum. If your high school is one of those, you may not even be able to take AP exams at all. (You cannot register for AP exams yourself, like you would register for the SATs. Your high school has to register you. If your own high school does not offer AP exams, you would have to reach out to another high school that does and arrange with them to be put on their AP roster. That’s not something that commonly happens.)
@b@r!um thanks actually i have my finals in january 17. So I will not be able to study for SAT Subject tests. And what I should do between Jan and December, if I choose to apply for Fall 2018? Of Course I will give tests but anything other than that? Is it ok because then I will have two gap years?
Thanks again.
Doesn’t really answer why you can’t sit the tests this fall. The tests are in subjects you have studied, so only a little extra study is required (for specifics on the material and test familiarity). Take them in October and you have plain sailing from then til your finals in January.
I am with collegemom. Study for the SAT Subject Tests and the ACT over the summer, take them in October, finish your college applications early (all of the forms you need to fill out should be available to you in August) and then you can focus on your final exams.
Whatever you want (and can afford) - work, travel, volunteer, become a full-time athlete - but do NOT start college in another country. That would make you a transfer applicant from an American perspective and substantially reduces your outlook for admission and scholarships.
As mentioned in question I am taking my SAT exam on Oct so can not take SAT Subject tests. Can i take some community college classes or certificate courses in my country or some other? Will it make me a tranfer appplicant?
You take the SAT and ACT in October, and SAT Subject tests in November. You get a “redo” in December in either SAT Reasoning or SAT Subjects, as well as ACT. ACT often stands for both SAT Reasoning and SAT Subjects for admissions, but SAT Subjects may better highlight your academic strengths.
You could take the SAT in October and the SAT Subject Tests in November. Or take the ACT in October and the SAT Subject Tests in October as well, and drop the SAT. Plenty of ways to finish your testing comfortably ahead of the application deadlines and your final exams.
Each college has its own threshold on the amount of post-secondary school work that would make you a transfer applicant. Finishing one full year of post-secondary school work makes you a transfer applicant almost everywhere. Shorter courses may or may not be enough to put you into the transfer pool, depending on the institution. I wouldn’t risk it.
