My friend's senior is applying to college and asks if they can get some waivers for admissions fees and testing (subject, college board, etc). They never applied for free/reduced meals at school, so a guidance counselor said probably not. I know they don't make much, but does not requesting free meals/low priced meals rule you out of the fees?

Does anyone know the income limit? They are a family of 3; mother had major surgery and doesn't work. Father is from another country/recently received AA degree (1st generation?), mother didn't attend college.

Great, I looked at the chart. So that would be $33,874 income for family of 3. I believe the mother is on disability now, not sure how much the father makes. She had major heart surgery, so it is all a stretch for them after that. Trying to help them without to much looking at all their financials. I asked if they were below $60M (for financial aid; I thought that was cutoff at least at some Ivy’s).

I know they don’t mind paying over time, etc. it is just all the application fees at once. I hate them to forgo applying. Their son is doing pretty well…in top 10% of class size over 800 kids, etc.

Uh, sybbie719? Read again what you quoted. It says “one or more of the following” not “all of the following.” As long as one of the listed requirements is met, then one is eligible for fee waivers according to that. Not having free/reduced lunch will not rule someone out.

Iam well aware that one does not have to meet all. I answered the original question that was asked by the OP. Then I went directly to the college board to quote th criteria as a source for the op.

This family SHOULD apply for free/reduced lunch if they are qualified for it. This is also one of the criteria for the simplified needs test for FAFSA whereby any assets are not counted in the FAFSA formula. The income has to be below $50K and the parents to satisfy one other criteria…one of which is free/reduced lunch. This could help them in the long run with eligibility for federally funded need based aid.

Your friend can apply for the free/reduced lunch first, then the counselor will be able to sign the NACAC fee waiver request to send to the colleges. Definitely apply if you qualify and need the waivers; the application fees can become quite expensive.

Is student eligible for the Ventures Scholars progam?

The Ventures Scholars Program is a national membership program designed to help underrepresented and first-generation college-bound students interested in pursuing math- and science-based careers link to information, resources, and opportunities that will help them successfully pursue their career goals.
