I’m not sure what you mean by “a lot higher” but SCS has a lower acceptance rate than the other schools within the university.

You can look up admission statistics by school on CMU’s website. For SCS, the stats (GPA and SAT) are higher and acceptance rates lower, than other schools within CMU.

If I didn’t take physics , would it hurt my chances??

It won’t help them.

If you have a math/science background but no actual com sci courses or related ECs, will that have a large impact on admissions?

I’ve seen a bunch of kids come to CMU as CS majors and take the introduction to programming courses because they’ve never programmed before, and if they did it was probably playing around with HTML or something. So I’d say it can be done, having a strong math background is more suited for CS since it’s a major that relies heavily on theory and mathematics, but you would still have to have a great application and other stats.

You don’t need any computer science experience. As Selena said, have a strong math background: As in advanced math courses, high scores on the math portion of the SAT I and math SAT II, and some math competitions wouldn’t hurt either. Although you can be perfectly fine without those math competitions as well.
