Admission / Major Connection

Two questions:

1) Are chances for admission at Brown influenced by choice of major? Do applicants who state a less popular major on their application have a better chance of admission than students who state a popular (and, therefore, more competitive) major?

2) Are Department Chairs ever involved in admission decisions? For instance, if stats are not outstanding, but experience gained (say, in microbiology) through a summer internship is worldclass and would definitely be appreciated by the microbiology depart, would micro. depart even be consulted on the admission decision?

I just signed up with CC. This is my first post. I hope I got it all right.

Yes, it might. Although don't say you're going to major in something few people major in just to get an advantage. They can usually tell.

If the department chair speaks to someone involved in admissions it could have an effect. Although listing the summer internship on your application probably is sufficient.
