These are somewhat random, because who really knows. March 10th is just over a month away and then we'll find out how close our perceptions were...

Wow, watertester, way to sound completely arrogant. High five.

But even that proposes the idea that test scores cannot be such a deciding factor. Think about how many applications they get for kids who have great test scores, great grades, and great recommendations.

People often talk about a "hook." It's a good idea, yes, but the thing about a hook is that is has to be genuine, and people usually think is has to be some unique talent or something. I like to think of it as giving yourself a theme. Give yourself a funky label that encompasses your interests. Talk about them in your essays and stress them at your interviews. Frankly, I think one of the best things a student can do in the application process is to make themselves stand out as individuals who can bring something special to whatever school they are applying for.

I guess I'm just trying to enforce that we are so much more than our test scores, but if they're good, they aren't going to put you at some sort of disadvantage!

I think that the main reason SSAT's don't carry too much significance is that they can vary so much!! My math increased 23% from December to January. My verbal decreased 5% and my reading decreased 6%! Say for instance you suk at verbal but you just so happen to get 50 words that you fortunately know! You get a 95%.

When I got an 82 on the reading I got 4 questions wrong 0 ommited. What!!!! Imagine if I got a 2 more right. I would have gotten a 90+!!! The SSAT can only measure your ability with probably a 7% range. So if you score a 90, you could have just scored a 97 or 83.

lol, i'm glad i don't have to worry ab out apps anymore but now college apps are coming up (teeth chatter and I bite my own tongue) so I am not completely out of the woods yet!

That's what I thought. I mean obviously the test score does not matter as much as the entire application, but I still find it irksome when people say of schools like Andover, Exeter, Harvard, Yale: "They could fill entire classrooms with students who got a perfect score on the SSAT/SAT, but they don't." They could just as easily fill entire classrooms with students that scored 85%, or 95%, but they don't do that either.

I don't understand why people make such a big fuss about their scores, if you're confident about everything else on your application, anything above an 80% on the SSAT in my opinion shouldn't really matter anymore.

And I agree, benevolent, the way the SSAT is scored is ridiculous. You can't really determine anything on it, except that you know how to take a test.

haha. the problem with me was that i got pretty high scores on 2 sections of the SSAT, and a huge drop in 1 of them (by huge, i mean huge. high 80's, and 1 low-50..). well, i'll be re-taking for next year, anyways <3

@ benevolent: ouch. i got 8 wrong, resulting in a 52 (cough cough) for reading, so.. were you in grade 8 when you took the test? or like.. grade 11? haha. i hope it's the second option..

Yea, pretty surprised how the Princeton review told me a 770 on the math would be a 90%, only to get back an 80 on the real thing with the same score...

Luckily, my overall score is more than enough to be a qualifier.

Andover- 25% (average alumni interview)
Deerfield-33% (great interview)
Exeter- 10% (horrible alumni interview; she worked for goldman sachs as equity derivatives, meaning shes about to get fired lol, she had no smile on her face, mean as hell)

Milton- 50% great interview and essays, safety school for me anyways.

heyyy guys. i posted a message a while back, which sounded kinda negative sooo i'm going to make amends to it.

just don't be arrogant, i really hate it when people are like oh, i think my chances for deerfield are like 80% just because i'm a good person. no offense to people who think that, it's your opinion and mine is mine and mine only.

of course don't think that posting scores up here is arrogant or anything, just be a little realistic ;)
but of course you can inflate your acceptance rates... i mean even andover only really has like 70% of it applicants considered for admission (ie. 1000 people apply, then around 300 of them are either incomplete or go straight to the garbage)
