Admission to Columbia

It is almost time to register for classes next year, and I am still unsure if I should take AP chemistry or not. I have my heart set on attending Columbia University, and I hope to pursue a career in journalism; in other words, chemistry would not be beneficial to my career choice. However, I want to take the hardest classes, and I have always passed my science classes with high A’s. I guess my biggest concern is what will happen if I get a B in the class, for I have never gotten a B. Will it decrease my chances of attending Columbia to take the class and get a B, or will it at least be better than not even trying at all?

Also, is AP art history worth it? I will already be in Honors English, Honors History, Model United Nations, Algebra Two Trigonometry, the Musical Theater class at the Academy of the Performing Arts, Spanish 2, and possibly AP Chemistry.

One class will not make a difference.

If you are taking the most rigorous course schedule available, and you are doing well - you obviously are because you never got a B yet, you will be among many other qualified candidates.

Columbia wants inquisitive minds, people who want to challenge themselves, and do well.

Art History is worth it, to me, because it shows you are open to learning about everything.

As for AP Chem, I would suggest taking it, you may surprise yourself. Even if you do get a B, it won’t be the end of the world for you.

You are clearly a very bright kid, so you must understand what the single digit acceptance rates mean. If you have read any results threads you will see some amazing kids getting rejected, and a few get in.

Best of luck to you
