Admission to Rowan Engineering

My daughter is a Junior taking a challenging schedule at her HS, accumulating a 3.9 UW, 4.5 W GPA. However, she struggles with standardized tests … her best score so far is a 25 on her ACT. While it seems like she should be safely admitted to Rowan, what about Engineering? Are the standards different from the rest of the University? Especially Chemical Engineering? Would her 25 ACT limit her? If so, what should be her goal?

I am not familiar with the specifics of Engineering scores, but I am sure that they are higher than for general admission. I would reach out directly to the school and see what you can find out.

@mtown27 See below for the average of Engineering accepted students. Yes the standards for Engineering is different/more difficult. The below figures are the ones they gave us at accepted students day. An SAT 1270 converts to ACT 28 and 1350 converts to a 30. There were 1800 applicants this year and 800 (yield 400) were accepted. Approximately 400 (yield 200) students were admitted into Rowan but denied into engineering, these students are told to re-apply for engineering after their freshman year. Has she considered taking SATs? If think Rowan favors them. The most important is her math score especially for Chemical Engineering. Rowan requires a minimum math score in engineering and I believe it’s a 600 which I would think is about a 27 on the ACT.

Admission Requirements

Rowan engineering freshmen have an average SAT score of 1270 (Math + Verbal) and 3.5 GPA. The average SAT score at entry in the Mechanical Engineering program is 1350. The students are typically in the top 15% of their high school graduating class, with the strong college-preparatory curriculum including 3 units of laboratory science and 4 units of college-preparatory math (including pre-calculus, calculus preferred).

My S applied this year for Mechanical Engineering with a 1250 SAT (650 Math) and 4.37 wgpa, top 7% of his class and was denied and placed into the Physics program. They even awarded him merit money, lol. With some other very impressive achievements on his resume, he was accepted to engineering programs at UMD, UDel, TCNJ, Western New England, RIT, and Syracuse with merit money from WNE, RIT, UDel, and Syracuse. He obviously declined the Physics acceptance at Rowan.

Take the SAT. They look for 650+ in math and 1300+ overall. Don’t tell anyone I said this, but sometimes in the interest of attracting more women in engineering, they might be a tad flexible. Depends on who else applies for that specific engineering discipline.

I’ve also found that if there’s a optional college essay on the application, exercise that option, whether it’s Rowan or elsewhere. Make it more about what she envisions her life being like at Rowan and what she envisions her after-future to be, rather than What’s In It For Me, I’m A Hard Worker, I’m A People Person, or I Learn Fast. Sometimes, it’s a tiebreaker. Nothing to lose by doing it.
