Hello there,
My daughter’s number one choice is the University of Texas at Austin. She’s very worried about her chances of getting in. She met the priority deadline so she should be hearing very soon. I was wondering if some of you could help me figure out her chances of getting in. She applied to the Moody College of Communications. Lastly, we live in state.
GPA: 3.89
ACT: 29
She had good essays, volunteer hours at a variety of different places, Vice President of her class, President of two different clubs, in National Honors Society, and did a variety of internships.
UT is a reach for her. I’m assuming she is not in the top 7% but her chances would be greater if she was in the top 10% or even top 25%. Per UT’s Common Data Set, 92% of all students are in the top 25%. I’m assuming the other 8% are athletes and other students that offer something unique to UT.
Her ACT is average for UT. Again, per CDS, the 25%/75% percentiles are 26/32. She is not trying for an extremely competitive major like CS, engineering or business but Moody is well respected and competitive. Your daughter does have good ECs. I think it is a nail biter until February.
I hope she has a second choice that she will be happy at. She is also a student that might get PACE or CAP. Also, I know several kids that were not in PACE or CAP that did not get in as freshman but were able to transfer to Moody after a year. They did have to have extremely high GPAs for that transfer. Good luck to your daughter.
@GTAustin hello, I also applied to Moody around late September and I still haven’t heard back. I am in top 15% in a very competitive high school maybe around 11% ), and received a 30 on the ACT. I believe I’m ranked 76 out of 662 students in my grade. I received a presidential service award (which is for 150+ volunteer hours) and I’m in National Honor society. Do you think I have a chance of getting in? thank you!
@collegegals, probably similar percentage. Again, being in the top 25%, I think, is a necessity. The 30 on the ACT is above average. You did not mention any leadership positions on your ECs which might hurt. You will know in February. Just be prepared if you don’t get accepted. Think thru whether you would accept CAP or PACE. Definitely have a school that you have been accepted to that would be a good choice. Make sure you have some options.
She has a pretty decent shot at getting into UT Austin. Of course, the major is always a different story because they’re competitive, including communications. Good luck to her!
@GTAustin I applied to the Computer Science major as a first-year student. I have a 3.85 unweighted high school GPA, a 4.2 weighted GPA, and a 35 ACT score. I am an Asian Male from out of state. I have multiple leadership positions such as being captain of my robotics team and being on my school’s Student Government, etc. What are my chances for admission? Also, I applied to the school around November 2nd (I’m in the regular pool), so do you have any idea when I’ll be getting a decision?
