Admissions chances...

I know these things are a huge nuisance, but I just thought I'd give it a shot... I've applied to Smith regular decision and I really have no idea where I stand. So I suppose I'm just looking for some perspective, I'd appreciate any opinions...

So here goes nothing...

I have a 4.27 weighted GPA, I'm ranked 17 out of 550 something kids, that puts me in the top 3% of my class, if that means anything?

I'm an AP Scholar with distinction, scored pretty well on most of my AP tests. I’ve taken just about every AP class that exists at my school. I've also taken an extensive college curriculum at a local JC. I've racked up about 20 something credits there.

My SATs are lacking, I have a 690 CR 690 W, with a 12 on the essay and a 510 M (feel free to gasp). I took it multiple times and studied like crazy but I guess the SAT just wasn't the test for me. Looking back I probably should have gone the ACT route but there isn't much I can do about it now.

Would it be wrong to assume that my high AP scores would possibly compensate for my not so great SATs?

As far as extra-curriculars go, I’ve been involved in water polo for four years, I’m the opinions editor of my high school newspaper, I launched an independent literary magazine, I’m in MUN, I interned for a state assembly woman, I did a summer program for architecture and I spend quite a bit of time working on my art.

I feel that my essays were strong, and my recommendations should be pretty solid… Oh and my interview went well, or atleast that was the impression I was left with.

So, what do you guys think? Thanks for bearing with me.

I think your odds are good, even if you're not going to be a Math major. The weak-in-Math SAT is not uncommon at Smith. Even so, no doubt about it, your Math SAT is in the bottom 25 percent for Smith...but you'd have at least some company. Otherwise, your profile looks very strong and Smith has de-emphasized SAT scores. If I were an admissions officer, your class rank, AP profile, and JC classes would seal it for me. I'd be moderately surprised if you didn't get in. Good luck waiting the next five weeks or so. (Iirc, D got her formal acceptance a few days before April 1.)

TD is usually right on the money with these guesses, but keep in mind, these are only opinions, not real admissions profiles. If we were that good, we'd be working in the admissions department (hmmm, I retire in a few years, that's a great idea.) I'd have to wait in line behind TD and RLT for that position however. ;)
Your stats are good, and as much as we want to believe that Smith is downplaying SAT's, they're still an important stat. Your math score could get in the way, but I think your overall profile is quite strong. Your essays could put you over the top. Best of luck, keep us posted.

Ditto.

Your math score is low, but about 20% of the class enters w/ a similarly low score (though, if you're interested in Arch other than Arch Hist, the mat becomes more imp). You are, by no means, out of the running - - especially if you're applying from outside of the NE corridor.

Good luck!

Yeah, you seem to be in the running. Lower math scores aren't uncommon, and besides, your SAT scores aren't hte most important thing anyway. With a good essay, grades, and extra currics, you can make up for it. I didn't score so hot on my SAT math exams, and I managed to make it here.

Your credentials aside, I was impressed with your writing as demonstrated in your CC post. I would have accepted you just for the clarity of your prose and the care you apparently took to eliminate typos and the like. If you were able to carry such thoughtfulness over to your application essays, and if your teachers and guidance counsellor have appreciated your writing ability as well, I think you might have a good chance. Good writing and good thinking go hand in hand, and both skills are in short supply these days.

Good luck!

Thanks for the positive feedback. I guess now all there is to do is wait. And I thought that completing the application was rough...
