Admissions Dean to take leave in fall

The June 21 issue of the Chronicle reports that Undergraduate Admissions Dean Christoph Guttentag will take a leave of absence this fall. His wife has a fellowship at MIT, and he will go with her.
Here's the interesting part: he plans to use the time to "reevaluate the University's admissions methods." He is quoted as saying, "Is this the best way we can do the things we do?...We're using the same selection process as 15 to 20 years ago. My plan is for me to come back to Duke ready for our office to do a better job for Duke."
Any predictions on likely changes to the admissions process?

I just hope that Duke won't feel the need to wl/r probable HYPSM acceptees to increase yield..but many colleges play that game (ranging from Brown to Lehigh to GWU...).. but if Guttentag is going to MIT.. he will probably make Duke more 'EC-focused' in admissions..

Isn't it interesting that MIT lost its admissions dean, and then Duke's is leaving to go there.

Maybe he'll take some time to study the ED-less policies of those Ivies up north.

it didn't say he's working in the admissions office at MIT

But he'll be around the area (assuming he'll be around the MIT area), and since he did say he was going to evaluate the admissions policy, it would be a perfect opportunity to do some field study. :)

Of course he's not taking it over. I actually was making a point regarding following an admissions department that has been hit by scandals recently. Not exactly an example to follow (granted it was only one person, but it was the admissions director...)

shrug. admissions officers seem to move around all the time between the top colleges at least

"I actually was making a point regarding following an admissions department that has been hit by scandals recently. "

Actually, Duke's yield increased this year - if anything, this is the worst time to leave, because its a chance for him to look like he did a good job compared to the past two years.

^ I think that knightshield was talking about the scandal that happened at MIT.
The admissions director had a few 'little lies' on her job resume.. she was forced to resign.

Oh yeah, wow, weird that MIT and Duke had similar problems and one's UG officer is going to another...

Duke had similar problems? When was this?

I meant the lax scandal, not any problems with the admissions officer = I misread everything, please ignore all my comments on this thread lol.

Haha, my comments were mostly conspiratorial, but it is somewhat interesting. I'm sure he'll be back quickly, as it would be underhanded to monitor another university's program only to leave for a position there.
