D is waiting to hear on admission from several selective liberal arts colleges where she has also been recruited. In the last 24 hours, she has received emails from coaches at two of the schools, basically reiterating their interest, updating her about when decisions will be sent, and asking her to contact them when she hears.
One coach alludes to a positive outcome. I can't tell anything from the other. Do these coaches know whether she is in or not, or do you think it varies from school to school?

From what I have heard, it varies by school. Some coaches do indeed know before recruits that they have been admitted, but are not allowed to disclose this to the student-athletes.

Yes, it depends on the schools. When DS was rejected by his #1 choice in mid march, he e-mailed the coach at #2 school which is a highly selective research U and told him that #2 was now #1. The coach e-mailed back the next day, 2 weeks before official decision release, and told him that he had talked to the Dean of admissions and barring any unforeseen circumstances, DS was accepted. Their equivalent of an instant Likely Letter :).

At another highly selective research U where he was also recruited, the coach had no idea of the decision, even after they were released.

Also, even if the coach does know, chances are they are not allowed to actually say. One coach told my son… I think you will be very happy tomorrow. Yet others will duck a call if they know the answer is not positive. But they have to be very careful because regardless of what they say Admission has the final say and it is not official unless from them.

Ihs76, what was the sport?
Did you receive a generic admission letter like everyone else or was there additional paperwork from the athletic dept?

.

This may again depend on the school. DS’s coach was pretty straightforward about it, basically passing on what the Dean of Admissions had told him. I do think though that DS had a pretty good chance of acceptance even without the recruiting.

epeelaxfh: Generic notification. Actually, DS never got the acceptance e-mail when it was initially sent out so we had to wait until snail mail arrived few days later. The coach did check again with admissions in that time and confirmed acceptance which was a big relief to us as we waited for USPS. The extra paperwork (health history, NCAA papers) came later. DS is a fencer, in a weapon bit speedier than your screen name sake :D.

Moral of the story: Even if it’s just a few days before the decisions are sent out, I think it’s worth letting the coach know if they become your first choice as it’s not too late for the Coach to put a call into Admissions. Obviously, the Coach has to have pull and has to really want you.

On recruiting athletes: Schools with rolling admissions will send letter once they have made their final decision. If the coach knows it is because of the grapevine. It is unlikely that a coach can simply go get information from the admissions committee. Ivies & other highly competitive schools will notify on apr 15, or if ed-when they make decision. For marginal academic students seeking admission to reasonably competitive colleges, the process does not proceed thru the admissions office but thru the dean of the school.
