@oj2018 D19’s school doesn’t rank, either. BUT, I believe they actually do provide the rank to colleges, just not to students/families. I think the GC mentioned this at some point, but I wouldn’t swear to it. Certainly, the school knows the rank, whether they tell us or not.
@oj2018 I cannot really answer your question since my only experience is with a HS that does rank. To take @momzilla2D’s point further, with or without a stated rank OSU can tell if a student falls in the top 10% or elsewhere in their class. My DS was top 20% and was admitted to engineering but I know others that were slightly lower in the class that were not in the last 5 years.
With a 3.2 GPA his rank was probably not high (this isn’t disclosed to students) but again, largely due to undiagnosed ADD because since then, his grades have been very good. His Math ACT score was a 32 and overall ACT was a 31. He has never sought an accommodation for his ADD, not even for ACT testing and he made this clear in his extra essay. His extra curricular (including science competitions) and volunteering we’re competive too. He is currently in AP Calculus and AP Physics and doing very well. Like I said it’s a bummer but he has been admitted to several other good Engineering schools (Dayton, Purdue & some others) so all is not lost. I’ve always wondered if people would be forthcoming in posting their denials, but to me I think it’s helpful for others who might be in similar situations, especially URM’s so they can see that the URM status doesn’t always help.
I can tell you that my son attends a very competitive high school that doesn’t rank. The top students fall in the top 30% of the class. My son was accepted with high SAT and GPA but at our school his rank wouldn’t be even close to the top 10%. So no I don’t think rank is a factor for many applicants.
@OhioMom6 thanks for posting your son’s denial. I think it is helpful and your son sounds very bright! @oj2018 I think OSU cares about rank when it is listed. However, my ds was accepted into engineering (CS) 3 years ago and we homeschool, so he did not have a rank. He did have 10 AP courses he took through online providers, and ACT of 34, and 3 SAT II subject tests (OSU says they do’t take those into account but we sent them anyway because he was homeschooled). So it is possible to get in without a class rank. My dd is applying this year and does not have as many AP courses (she has taken 4 online and self-studied for 2, but she is taking some dual enrollment classes this year). She has no SAT II subject test scores, and her ACT is only a 31, so we will see.
Well, it looks to be that time of year again!! Let’s get the Class of 2023 thread going. Good luck to all!!!

WHAT CONTROLS GETTING DECISIONS FIRST
It doesn’t matter how early you send in ur application it matters what major you applied for. Ohio State this year looked at a lot of engineering and certain science majors first. I don’t really know what made them choose these majors over others—maybe there is more applicants or less applicants idk. Everyone that I know that got their decision applied for engineering majors. Best of luck to everyone!
@noodles123 my son was accepted this wave and is Business.
YAYYYYYY!!! They admit other majors on the first wave despite not being engineering major? engineering just makes a vast amount of first wave (guidance counselor told our seniors that).
Does this mean that other engineering applicants that have not heard are more likely to be denied in the next waves?
@adaorange I dont think it should hurt your chances. There are so many engineering applicants and you pretty much have to apply by Nov. 1st, unlike a lot of other majors that accept until the regular decision deadline. It seems like a lot are accepted, and a lot were, but those who were rejected probably decided not to share that information.
My son also got his acceptance this week and is a Business major. He applied in mid-October.
Ty. It’s funny, I think my son is more patient than me about all this.
A good friend of mine sent 3 kids to Purdue … fantastic school!
@adaorange Don’t worry. You have the University of Michigan as an instate option. (Which, btw, IS better than OSU in Engineering.)
As an instate student, I can’t wait any longer. Seeing all of these CSE acceptances is making me worried I won’t get in.
I applied engineering, (intended major computer science) as an out of state student. I thought going in that I would Ohio State denied students from engineering, but still admitted them into the university as a different major. However, I haven’t seen that yet, can anyone clarify?(I have not heard back yet.) Also, if I meet the requirements for the Buckeye Scholarship, would it then be safe to assume that I should be able to get accepted into the university, since I already qualify for a scholarship? Thanks.
correction- I thought going in that Ohio State denied students from engineering, but sometimes still admitted them into the university as a different major.
I’m really scared because I haven’t gotten any decision yet and my intended major is in engineering (astronautical). I applied in early October for early action. I have a 29 composite ACT score and a 3.9 GPA with AP credits, volunteer services, etc. I also applied for the scholar’s program and Morrill Scholarship program. This is a very stressful time!
@TayMarie I have pretty much the same stats as you and have not heard back for Engineering, either.
I’m an instate student.
