Admissions help and other info...

Ok - well my son emailed the Outreach Officer. Now the guy says - application looks good, have we gotten SAT results from latest test yet (no - tomorrow) but wants to know if he doesn't "get into West Point directly, would he consider West Point Prep School?" How is he supposed to answer that? Yes -- then we feel like they will just put him there -- NO and we feel like they will think he isn't that motivated. UGH!

these are his exact words: "Also, if you do not get into West Point directly, would you be interested in attending West Point Prep School?" --

That is a standard question; everyone is asked that. Be honest...if you get prep, it's a good thing...if you get nothing, that's bad...whether it's USMAPS or civilian prep, it's a gift. Decide now if you are willing. My son's close friend is at prep this year...they won't graduate together, but they'll be members of the same long, gray line!

Nope Not at all. Don't even think it. Many kids turn down prep offers. Either they don't believe it IS a great deal or they don't want the extra year.

They are asking because they have a genuine interest in your son and are trying to build a class. Nominations are not even out yet. If you son doesn't get a nomination he can be offered prep. If he doesn't make the top of the congressman's slate and get in off the waiting list he can be offered prep. There are many factors involved here.

IMO - his chances are greatest if he shows enough interest to accept a prep offer. This shows dedication to reaching his goal.

One thing to remember is that USMAPS (prep school) is generally offered to candidates who are not academically qualified and need extra preparation to succeed at USMA. AOG scholarships (Civil prep) are offered to candidates who are fully qualified and on the waiting list but have not won a cadetship.

"Yes -- then we feel like they will just put him there " -No that is not the case at all.

"NO and we feel like they will think he isn't that motivated. UGH!" - Perhaps...One thing is for sure, your son will not be offered the prep school option if he says he is not interested....

Remember, many kids are taking 5 years to graduate college these days. If your son does prep, he'll just be on the "5 year plan."

This is my CFA score, I know its not great, but would it be enough?
pull up - 10
bb throw - 70ish?
shuttle - 8.0
crunches - 75
push ups - 75
1 mile - 6.30

..if I had to send those scores, would it be ok?

Yes, those are good scores. Unless you feel you can do better.

JonDavid:

Echoing what the others said about prep. I was asked the same question and told them by all means yes. I ended up being wait-listed then getting in on a Superintendent's nomination (i think that's what it was), but i would have definitely taken prep school. And if he were to take five years to graduate from here, it's better than never getting in. If his ultimate goal is to graduate and become an officer, then he will go through whatever he has to, to make it in.

American soldier, how is my CFA score? Can I pass with it? Also, If i send my application in by the first week of November, do you know when I can get a response? I know that West Point is in a rolling basis, the fundamental time frame.

I'm basically done w/ my application process, but is wondering when my cadet statement is perfect. Also, I haven't official taken the CFA or did not get my interview.

The CFA is worth 10% of your whole candidate score. It is worth practicing and doing your best, not just aiming to pass.

Most candidates will not hear about their appointments until after the Congressional Nominations have been processed starting in January/February 2009. Those with LOAs are the exception.

I'm impressed with your score...you could always improve, but that's close to what i did, and if you were able to sustain 6:30 over two miles, you would be maxing the run on an Army PT test. Try to bring your pushups and situps up; you've got plenty of time to do it. You could see those scores increase by 20 each in the next two months if you work at it. Pull ups could improve, i would shoot for about 14. BBall is a lot better than i ever did (i never did get the hang of that!) and your shuttle is pretty good too. But if you were to submit it now, it's not too bad. I would still work at it though. See if you can bring your run down too, just for kicks.

To AmericanSoldier,
Thank you for advice. I was also wondering, if I were to send my application at Nov. 8, so two Saturdays from today. Do you know when I may receive a response? I know that West Point is based on a rolling admissions - first come first serve, so I was wondering when I will know.

Thanks you.

Your admissions process will depend on your region's admissions staff, the number of files currently up for review, and your MALO's involvement, to name a few factors. So there's no saying how long it might take. I don't know how they rank files in order of importance once they've reviewed them. Just see my advice to JonDavid about communicating with your MALO. Hopefully yours will work to get your file in front of the admissions board often while you improve your profile.

Is the CFA scores sent through the email or through mailing it?

kpsong:

I don't know anymore...I'm not familiar with the new online admissions process so I could not tell you for sure. However it requires the observer to sign that your recorded performance is accurate, so my guess is it goes through the mail, but i could be wrong.

what type of nomination are there? What is a competitive nomination?

I believe that all information is now sent online - the candidate provides the school contact details and e-mail addresses and links are sent to each individual teacher/counselor listed allowing them to submit verified information.

If you already received an nomination from your representative, can you get another one from your senator? And the nomination is for the same Academy?

-kpsong87

That is very possible. It occurs quite frequently if the candidate is highly competitive and in a less competitive state.
