Admissions help and speculation

Hi I’m currently a junior in HS attending a public school in NJ. Lately I have been looking at potential colleges and am curious as to where I stand. My freshman year I did pretty poor a 79 gpa; my sophomore year was slightly better in my core class’s department, but still ending with a 80 gpa due to goofing off in gym and spandish. However, my junior year has been much better… I’m currently taking two honors courses and have an unweighted gpa of 90 (this may not be that impressive to some people though, lol). My sat scores were also fairly good 1900. So basically the bottom line is this, I began with a poor freshman year but managed to improve every year thereafter with a huge jump my junior year. In addition I’m planing on taking 3 hard AP’s along with all challenging courses/electives. My question than comes down to this; how highly do colleges value a student who has shown vast improvement, and does freshman year really count for that much? Thanks

Colleges will value improvement, but you will still be worse off than a student who did well all 3 years.

Freshman year does definitely count if the school says it does. Some schools like the University of California system do not consider freshman year grades.

keep working hard to show the steady improvement and you’ll have plenty of options. look for threads here related to B and B+ kids and where they went - below 3.4 and where they went, etc. you are not the only one, and if you are serious about maximizing your potential, you will meet with success.
