Hey guys, I hope you are all having a great summer. I was a junior in high school, but now after this summer ,I will be a senior. I just got my report card today for junior year, and I need to ask this question that I have had for quite a while now. So, I have had an amazing sophomore and junior year. As a sophomore I got a 4.92 weighted GPA (4.00 unweighted), and as a junior I got a 5.00 weighted GPA (4.00 unweighted). However, I messed up really badly during freshman year in which I got a 4.00 weighted (3.45 unweighted). Yeah I really messed up. Freshman year was my hardest year, really after that it was smooth sailing kind of. But anyway, my counselor told me really ambiguous information about how this would affect my college application. Excluding SAT scores, AP’s, extracurriculars, sports, and other notable achievements (which according to my school, I did exceptionally well in. I even wrote a bestselling novel. Please exclude that when making your judgement) .Will this affect my college chances. Maybe I should reword the question, how much will this affect colleges decisions of excepting me or not. Keep in mind I have my eyes set on very prestigious colleges. If this is not enough information to decide that, tell me if this is “good” or “bad” and why. Thanks!
Well, your unweighted GPA is now a little above a 3.8, which looks very good to most colleges. Colleges will also consider that you have an upward trend in GPA, which shows that you fixed your mistake freshman year and that you have potential. If your EC’s, test scores, and everything else are as good as you say they are, you should be fine for most prestigious colleges.
Your fine anywhere I would say except maybe MIT which has like a 3.9 average. Princeton and Stanford do as well but they barely look at fresh grades if at all.
Colleges want to see you can do well in harder courses…which you have been doing. Don’t worry too much…they put more weight on your Junior courses.
