i really like UCSB, and I live in Boston. Will that increase my chances of admission because they would want geographic diversity? Thanks!

i dont think it would increase… kinda just on an even playing field. maybe they do, i dont think it would

The UC’s used to give preference to CA residents, but now because of the budget crisis they will probably admit more out of staters, since we pay a lot more.

Are you (or your parents) willing to spend over $200,000 on for college when you could spend half of that on an equal university? Not incredibly wise in my opinion.

what are you referring to countrygentelman? what equal university are you referring to?

UCSB costs $50,000/year currently for out of state. That cost is only going every year too, so be prepared to spend over $200,000 for your four years.

These other equal universities are located all around the country. Granted none have the campus of UCSB but they offer the same level of education. For example, last year I applied to UCSB, got in, and decided $200,000 was waaaaay too much. So I decided on University of Wisconsin-Madison. Same education, fraction of the cost.

oh that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the help! Are all the other UC’s as expensive? and is Santa Barbara the best behind Berkeley and LA?

All UC’s more or less cost the same with some differences that have to do with the immediate area of the campus (mainly housing).

For an in-state student, it’s a pretty good deal. I love this school, but I don’t know if I would pay the out-of-state tuition for it (or for any school, for that matter) if I lived somewhere else. But I guess it really depends on you and your family.

As for your last question, if you’re talking about academic prestige, UC San Diego is generally considered the third “best,” with UCSB arguably the fourth (although very much tied with UC Irvine and UC Davis).

ucb ucla ucsd / ucsb ucd uci ucsc/ ucm ucr= how the rating generally goes as in 1st 2nd 3rd best groups.

do some research on schools, dont jsut sign up for a school cuz its on the beach and sounds awesome (although it is an awesome school)

all UC’s tuition is the same, just cost of living can be slightly different. practically the same though. if the school has something specifically for you that another school doesnt or if this is your dream school, then maybe its worth it. other than that look at closer schools to you, or dont go to school in cali… its expensive for out of staters
