is the acceptance rate for out of state students lower than it is for in state students like it is for UCLA? or is it just that ucsb happens to have less out of state applicants and thats why the percentage for out of state student is so low?

The UC schools used to favor CA applicants but in light of the budget crisis they have made a decision to accept more OOS students because they pay more to attend. So data from past years may not be applicable.

That said, I find it hard to justify the $55K/year cost when you can attend a large impersonal public for much less in your home state. And odds are that cost will rise by $5-$10K per year by the time you graduate. The UCs are still a decent deal for CA students, but very pricy OOS. Be sure you’ve talked over the costs with your parents and they are ok with it; the financial aid at UCs is not very good for CA students, and downright lousy OOS.

Unless you’re sitting on a gold mine, UCs are a horrible deal for out of staters. That fact denied me the reasonable chance of attending UCSB. No way I could ever justify spending over $200,000 on my education.
