Admissions Officer Encounter

I posted this on the "College Admissions" board originally; just thought that the Stanford people might want to read it:

I'm not trying to be modest when I say that I didn't think my application to Stanford was too remarkable when I wrote it- it was alright, but I thought it was a little cliched and didn't reveal enough about me. However, I recently went to a Stanford reception in Houston, and I was amazed to find that an admissions officer read my name tag and remembered who I was (I guess admissions is regional?). I can't believe how well he remembered my application- he even recited several things from it, and said he laughed aloud at several places. My point here isn't to brag. I had always laughed when I read that admissions officers said they try to really get to know their candidates- I mean, with thousands of applications and relatively very little information on all of them, how could you? But after I met this guy, who seemed to know me pretty well, I was truly impressed. I just thought obsessive CCers might want to know that at least college admit officers do their very best to be fair.

Congrats...I would take that as a good sign! :)

Not to spoil the fun, but I'm pretty sure the admission officer's review the accepted apps that were invited to the reception. The guy at my reception remembered everyone he talked to (from those I observed).

Oh, I guess that makes more sense.

yeah i got the same vibe as well! although i did not get to talk directly to the ad-rep, he seemed to really "know" me through my app. he even quoted it! haha, trivial but it made my day...

unclefeezus, i think the admissions officer was sincere. i understand they act as advocates for those the applicants they recommend to the adcom. in order to do their job well, i bet they have to know the application pretty well and be able to describe it to the committee as to why the potential admittee would fit into their school. I would think that at especially at Stanford and other highly competitive schools, they have to back up their recommendation and basically present a strong, valid argument as to why their potential admittee should get in over the next admission officer recommendation. You students who are applying and getting into these schools are remarkable! Why wouldn't you leave an impression on these folks who make college admissions their career?
Great Job and thanks for sharing.

I recently visited Yale and was impressed that the admissions officer who I randomly bumped into remembered every detail about my application. We even got into a discussion about one of my essays Don't underestimate their memories! :)

yea - the same thing happened to me at the stanford reception. the admissions person remembered my essay and talked to me for like 10 mins about it. i was uber impressed
