Admissions Problems from previous years

Last year I had 4 friends who applied to the U, all towards the end of the priority deadline. They all heard back the same night: wait listed and then later denied. Numerous other people from my school had also applied in December and had the same results. That's why this year, assuming that the school had filled up, I applied early (middle/end of august).

However I applied for nursing, along with numerous others from my school. Every year the U accepts approximately 100 freshman into its nursing program, and if the students are denied from nursing they can still be accepted into the college of liberal arts. The average act is a 28 and most admitted are in the top 10% of their class. At my school there have been people who applied after me with lower stats but have already found that they've been accepted into the overall all school. I've assumed that because I applied for nursing it's postponing my admittance decision, (I'm right on the boarder, I have a 28 act but am not in the top 10% - I'm in the top 15%, however I have a lot of medical experience) because I have not yet heard of anyone getting accepted early admission into nursing.

My worry is that if it continues to take so long to hear from Minnesota because of my nursing application, that by the time they make their decision (and if I'm denied) that CLA will be full and I'll be denied from the overall school too. Does this make sense and if so, is it a logical concern?

I'd appreciate any opinions/advice, for the U is my top school and I'm beginning to get very worried. Thanks!

It seems like the process for getting into nursing is a bit different than other programs/schools at UMN - have you gotten college credits from a MNScu school or are you in process? Or, are you applying to CLA under the Freshman nursing program? I confess I don’t anything about the nursing program?

<a href=“Freshman Nursing Program | Office of Admissions”>http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/admissioninfo/nursing_guarantee.html</a></p>

http://www.nursing.umn.edu/BSN/frequently-asked-questions/index.htm</a></p>

If you meant to apply to the Freshman nursing program (b/c you don’t have required credits described in 2nd link above), you could call admissions and tell them you made a mistake and want CLA to be you first choice for the application (then you apply to nursing program from CLA as described in 2nd link).

It sounds like nursing is more holistic than rest of UMN programs which seem very stats-driven. You could get a LOR from someone who worked w/ you where you gained medical experience or a teacher in either the case of you having college credits already and applying directly to nursing program or you are freshman applying to the program described in 1st link (ie applying to CLA toward applying to nursing program once credits are completed).

In any case, you could call the admissions office and ask about timing of review of applications.

My daughter just got admitted to CLA with Freshman nursing guarantee. The letter came today. She was not paying attention to the tracker so I can’t tell you when that changed.

I too have been accepted to the CLA as well as the Freshman Nursing Guarantee (which I have accepted my offer of admission to, YAY!) I was first admitted to the CLA and got my letter in the mail and then a few days later my application tracker changed to include the Freshman Nursing and I got another letter in the mail, so admittance to either are not connected. I’m not guaranteeing anything, but I think that your stats are quite good and the program acceptances are averages, not baselines. Good Luck!

@cemalone‌ this made me feel a lot better!! What were your stats if you don’t mind me asking? Congrats by the way :)

Also @cemalone‌ does it say nursing on your actual acceptance letter?

Edit: just reread your comment… You answered my question already, sorry!
