Does anyone know what happens to an application at Princeton? I've seen descriptions of "the life of an application" for various colleges, but I can't find one for Princeton.

All I found was that under Hagardon each and every app had to be approved (or rejected) by him, while under Rapelye, apps get voted on by committee.

I know that Rapelye is notorious for giving a LOT of leeway to first generation applicants.

MzLover, where did you read about that? wow.. that's crazy.

how about things like low income family and a school that's never sent anyone to princeton?

YES! She gives lee-way to first generation students! YES! haha! I stand a chance!

sorry.. i just feel good hearing that. But.. i do remember Princeton Info session and on their brochure, they were one of the few colleges that stated what percent last year the incoming class was first-generation college students..

This is the gawd-awful truth to thow they choose their students..

First, they look at your name and jusge it against a criteria. If they need more "Janes" than "Matts," you have a good chance of getting into the next round.

So after they judge whetehr they like ur name or not, they fold up your application into a paper airplane. 30 feet away, are three trash cans, each with a varying diameters. the adcoms, who are infinitely more intelligent than us mere mortals, then take their best aim in trying to aim those paper airplane applications into one of the three trach cans. the one on the left is rejected (it happens to be 9 ft in diamter), the middle is those wiatlisted (4foot), and the admission trash can (1 foot) is on the far right.

The adcmons line up and all throw their paper airplanes simultaenously. The ones which land in the admitted trash can are admitted. the other trash cans are burned.

There you have it. Thats how they choose their students

the ones which dont land in any trash cans are randomly read at odd intervals.

is there a way to know if our app is under Hagardon or Rapelye?

Uhhh, has anyone else NOT received the "File Complete" postcard yet? Or is it just me? :(

Hagardon left end of last year. All apps this year are under Rapelye, the new dean of admissions.

Here's one about general diversity

I'm trying to find the one about first generation students.

Some info about her::

On legacy::

I can't find it/might have missed it, but somewhere on the internet there is an article with this quote::

"We go out of our way to admit first generation applicants."

yeah.. i remembered that quote...

but all schools go out of their ways to admit first generations..

hobbes - my name is as random as it gets. I like my odds of getting through the first round. = )

What does it mean for apps to be "under rapelye?"
someone please clarify for me

rapelye is the dean of admissions

They're separating Princeton admissions into what it used to be (when it was under the former Dean of Admissions Fred Hargadon) and what it is now (under current dean Janet Rapelye). Apparently it's a pretty big difference.

so, under rapelye, will applications be considered based on a committee vote? or does the dean get to make the final call?

If you're a first generation, do you specifically have to say "FIRST GENERATION" or will they "get it" from your common app stuff where you list your parents education?

Yes, it's all committee now.

Hargadon left because 1. he was too old (although he still works at Princeton) and 2. he was too embarrassed to keep working there after the Yale hacking fiasco.

ivyboy - they'll "get it" from your app stuff where you list your parents education.
