Admissions question--research project a hook maybe?

So, I've been doing research at the state university for the past year and next year as well. My mentor actually got his PhD at Cornell and the stuff he works on (zoology--behavioral science) is something Cornell specializes on and that's what I've been working on for the past year as well.

Would this help me at all for admissions to Cornell and by how much?

And another question, if I apply to Cornell, I'm defn going in as a science major, but while I have done a lot of science research outside of school and compete in local/state fairs, I got a B in AP Chem and AP Calc AB this year. >< I shouldn't have gotten a B in AP Calc AB but AP Chem is a really hard class at my school and only 2 ppl in my class got As. Would that hurt the admissions part?

Thanks for your help!

What did you get out of the research? Publication? Abstract? Presentation at a conference? Poster?

Yes...of course research is a huge bonus...extra points for any publications/awards. I did research for 3 years and had 2 publications when I applied...I'm convinced it secured my admission.

Obviously...good grades in the sciences are necessary. You might consider having your AP Chem write your recommendation if the teacher knows how hard you worked and could speak well on your potential for a Cornell education. You also might want an additional letter from your research mentor commenting on your ability to work independently in the lab and such.

Good luck!
