Neumes, it makes me realize how lucky some of us alums were :-). I wonder what the admissions rate was in the early eighties??

Though I went to Northwestern undergraduate and graduate, I'm pretty certain if I had applied in 2008 - I would have been rejected.

The Daily Northwestern says the Acceptance Rate went up from 24.7% last year to 25.3% this year

NBN's math and sources are pretty un-impeachable. I'm inclined to believe them.

TheIndividual: Oh, well that would explain it! ;) That 0.6% difference, I mean! (quick, tell me if my math is off; it's been a while.)

NU does look fabulous. That quarter schedule is intriguing. I'm wondering if it's kind of fun to be out of school until almost the end of Sept.--nice time to travel? have a summer job extended? (although not so fun to be still in school in June, when everyone else is scarfing up the jobs!).

Hmm, I think the acceptance rate went down... not up.
I believe NBN's stats, since they went directly to the assoc. provost for the information.

I hope NBN is correct! Nevertheless, my sibling at Northwestern teases me a bit by saying Northwestern is getting less selective [i.e. It was harder to get in when she applied (which is not the case for her specific class of '09 -- an acceptance rate of 29.71%) of course I'm sure sibling rivalry plays a part].

Also, the applicant pool has grown from 16,221 to 25,027, a 54% increase!

but siblings will be siblings

The Daily ran a correction today saying their story was wrong.

My understanding is that last year's acceptance rate of 27% included those students who were eventually admitted from the waitlist and that the initially reported acceptance rate was below 25%. This year's acceptance rate was probably higher initially to avoid having to take any or many from the waitlist, as well as to test Northwestern's burgeoning popularity against elite cross admit schools like HYP & S. But, this is just a guess.

This must be a tough year getting into Northwestern. I know at least three students who would normally be strong candidates but didn't even get on the waitlist.

To me, the most important thing is the caliber of the enrollees that end up at NU, not the admit rate. The ~1470 on SAT shows that the applicant pool is very strong. It's very possible that the average SAT of enrollees will hit another record high.
