Hello,
I’m quite new, but I wanted to share my predicament. In my years of school from elementary to high school I’ve always done well in my STEM(Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mat) classes. Thus I developed a passion for doing IT work as well as wanting to learn how to code and hopefully become a Software Engineer one day(possible to change). I went a pretty new high school and started doing internships that involved clerical work as well as database management which seemed pretty easy. I input data and such and other small tasks. After I graduated high school I got accepted into the engineering division of a college in New York. I was close to home and my commute was about an hour. I was in Trigonometry in high school and in college I skipped Pre-Calc and went on to Calculus(20100) which my advisor had recommended I take. I felt nervous so reluctantly I agreed. It was a really poor decision, I failed the course with an F but I passed all my English based classes very easily. The second semester I wanted to do better so I chose Calculus again and had to take Chemistry 10300 and Computer Science 10300. I failed both Calculus and Comp. Sci. and I knew I did poorly. I was still depressed from the first semester so it translated into my work, but I did my best to study multiple hours a day and even giving up time with my friends. I did pretty well in Chem surprisingly but I seemed to pass my English class again by putting little to no effort into it.
Now, I would really like to restart or transfer(if possible) to a different college but I’m afraid I won’t be accepted due to my really poor GPA(around a 1.5~1.9…) I don’t have much focus at home and not a really great environment at home since my parents don’t understand my struggles because we are immigrants. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice as to what I should do. I really want to leave and possibly restart somewhere else even though it may cost me A LOT more money.
I also need help finding myself. I really like technology, fixing computers, assembling them, being able to code(just a little bit), database management, and other things. I just chose Computer Science since it fit with most of them, but I am not so quite sure either.
Any help would be appreciated and hopefully it can help me out.
You need to review trigonometry on Khan Academy. It’s free. Do that diligently starting now.
Look into your nearest community college. Will your university accept classes from a cc for grade repair or does it require you to retake the class at their campus or at any 4-year cuny ? Whatever it is, do what 'repairs’your grade.
Your adviser face you terrible advice when s/he told you to skip pre-calculus !!!
Once you know where you can/must take it, register for pre-calculus. If there’s still a summer session B Pre-calculus class with open seats that you could take, register asap. Only take that one class and dedicate time to it. Go to the tutoring center, use Khan academy. Get an A. Then, retake calculus. I think your second attempt will impact your earlier attempt IE., you’ll do better and it’ll erase your first attempt from your GPA Even the failed class will still be on your transcript.
Since you’re doing well in them, take general education classes at the community college or the cuny, whichever costs least. Take an art class, a sociology class, etc.
Hopefully, come October, you’ll be getting A’s on all fronts.
At that point, you’ll be able to transfer.
As for your major : have you Tried data science? Ist?
@MYOS1634
I’ve never heard of or taken data science. I really like hands on things with computers, could be simple as clerical work, but I really like fixing them and just working with them. Database Management for me was pretty easy for me because I would input things into excel and such and enjoyed my time
If you let me know what college you were in, I can tell you how they call it there.
I currently attend The City College of New York and I attend the Grove School on Engineering there. I wanted to have a fresh new start at a different college preferably somewhere that’s not in the city. So I should take like filler classes to boost my grades? i.e pre-calc and intro classes?
Well, you need to take precalculus because you need it hefore you can succeed in calculus , as your two F’s have shown.
The other classes I suggested tend to be gen eds part of requirements at most colleges.
You can’t really have a 'fresh start’s in that your record is in a national clearing house. It’ll follow you forever. However you can dilute the bad grades by taking classes you succeed in and that will transfer no matter where you go, and you can fix the GPA problem by retaking the classes you got D/F in and getting them ‘repaired’. You need to read your college catalog so that you know the rules governing grade repair at your college and at Grove. For instance, would retaking those 2 classes at the closest community college 'repair’the grade or does it have to be taken at Grove?
You’ll only be able to transfer once your GPA is well above what it is now.

Thank you for all the info. One question I have is what do you mean by gen eds? If you could clarify that
You can retake the classes you didn’t do well at. You may receive an R on your transcript but it will help your gpa so much. I do not believe that you can “start over” anywhere, but you can definitely backtrack.
I’m sorry about your struggles at home. If it affects your study time, try coffeeshops and libraries it can help a lot.
What he means by general eds, is that basically no matter what major you are there are some classes everyone needs to take. Community colleges are great at offering these and usually a cheaper option. General educations include english, writing, math etc.
I’m sorry the you’ve been struggling with depression. Never be afraid to ask for help and know that someone always cares. If finding yourself and making yourself happy, search for things that bring you joy and never let go.
Gen eds = general education - the CUNY pathways classes that all cuny schools must offer and all students must take.
