You aren’t “enrolled” until you pay your tuition deposit. Until you do that, you won’t officially be a student next year.

@lecor:

So basically 80k was just an estimate because it’s 30k for the international program and then 51k for tuition+room/board/fees for the year. I made the assumption that this program was created to get more money for NeU so that’s why it is so expensive. If they cut the tuition for the portion we will be attending (spring) than it should be a lot cheaper.

I don’t know exactly about this program, but I assume it’s similar to normal study abroad. Usually for study abroad, tuition ends up being around the same (plus a moderately small fee). I doubt Northeastern would charge 30k ON TOP OF the 50k cost of attendance. But could be wrong.

I am going to call them on Monday I’ll let you guys know. :)

By the way, has any Korean got into this program?
=.=

Hi everyone,

I was accepted into the program last year, but was allowed to take classes at a community college first semester rather than going abroad. I was lucky enough to have friends at NU already, so making friends wasn’t really an issue for me. I will say that the transition for almost every NU.in student that i have talked to is very rough. You don’t get to start with the rest of your class in the fall, with the sort of “no one knows anyone” lets make friends atmosphere because by the time you start in January all of the other freshman have pretty much found their groups. Even for people that did go abroad, most of the people they hang out with are just the people that they met on their trip. Housing is all over the place because they basically place you where ever there is room because many upperclass man leave to go on co-op so most of you will be placed in upperclassman housing rather than a typical freshman dorm.

I was placed in a freshman dorm which has definitely helped meeting people but I am definitely at a disadvantage. For those of you trying to “get out” of going for a medical reason NU is very strict on what they will consider an acceptable reason.

Although I don’t have the going abroad experience, i’d be happy to answer any other questions about the transition to Boston in the spring

**the only reason I was allowed to not go abroad was because of a medical reason

i do know a few other reasons for being exempt from going abroad such as if you aren’t old enough for the only country that supports your program but you won’t be exempt simply because you just don’t want to go

Thanks @familyguy!

@leah125, do you think you eventually found your friend group even though it was hard at first going spring semester, or are you still struggling? I want to go to Northeastern so badly that I’m considering NU.in, but I am really concerned about missing the pretty crucial fall semester for meeting everyone. Would say by the end it all worked out for you? Also, is there any way to request a freshman dorm for spring semester? Thanks!

I was also recently admitted into the NU.in program with a 6k grant for the study abroad program and no merit. I’m actually a bit surprised at my status, but guess I was unaware of how competitive Northeastern is until I visited last week.
I applied to the College of Art and Media Design, and I thought I would easily get in considering my portfolio, which I sent to NEU, was accepted by RISD (7k grant), SAIC(80k merit), MICA(waiting), and SVA(waiting), which are the country’s best art schools. Northeastern isn’t even NASAD accredited. I wonder whether or not they even looked at my portfolio because I applied to Interactive Arts opposed to Studio (IA does not require a portfolio; studio does).

Northeastern is still my first choice, and I’m really bummed out because the NU.in program costs considerably more (especially because I want to go to London where food is not included). I’m not sure 80k in loans is worth it - although UI Designers potentially can make 80k annually. I might see if I can get more money from NEU.

I do have a few questions about the program though:
- On Northeastern’s chart, the London program is with St. Norbert College. Aren’t colleges in the UK equivalent to high school in the US?
- Are the classes you take related to your major or just general classes?
- How does this effect the Co-Op program that is supposed to occur in the Spring of the 2nd year, especially for CAMD students where employers require a portfolio?

Also, @familyguy, on my “acceptance letter” and financial aid package, it says the spring semester will cost approximately 28,000 ish. When I get home, I’ll tell you guys the break down of it. But essentially, the first year will cost more than 60k, before scholarships and aid.

@Myloto, I don’t think it’ll end up costing 80k, I think it’s more like 55k considering we aren’t technically enrolled at Northeastern till fall, we’re enrolled in NU.in

I’m actually a CAMD major too (photography), and Northeastern is also at the top of my list, which is why I’m actually considering this program. I agree with you about the portfolio… I applied to Digital Arts, and I feel like they hardly reviewed mine either, I thought it was pretty good. I’m hoping NU.in is worth it, because while it is definitely not ideal, at least we got in rather than waitlisted.

@lecorbett7, I would need to take out 80k in private loans to attend Northeastern for the five years.

The fall semester on NU.in will cost around 32k - 35k for England with food, books/supplies, and health insurance added in.

The spring semester looks like this:
Tuition: 19,680
Student Center Fee: 70
Student Activity Fee: 120
Student Recreation Fee: 46
New Student Fee: 350
Residence Activity Fee: 32
Room & Board: 6,572
TOTAL: 26,870

Estimated costs
Books & Supplies: 500
Transportation: 450
Personal: 450
TOTAL: 1,400

ESTIMATED TOTAL: 28,270

28,270 + an estimate of 32k = 60,720 for the first year at NU, which is about an 8k difference in costs from for a fall admit.

Did anyone that got into the program receive merit aid / grants?

@Myloto, oh ok I thought you meant 80k for the year. And yeah it’s significantly more expensive, but still worth the thought I think. Good luck with you college decision process!

Hey guys, I am an international student from Spain accepted to this program… Is there any other international student considering this program? Specially Australia or Ireland? (I’m trying to decide)

And also Im curious about the stats of the people that were accepted to this program, it does seem to be borderline applicants. Mine were:

SAT: 1780 (i know)
GPA (unweighted): 3.91
Captain of the varsity soccer team (both in Spain and in MN where I spent one year as an exchange student)
Captain of the varsity tennis team in madrid, played n1 in both.
Participated in 3 show choirs, received “perfect score” award for the state contest (voice)
Got to the final of a national business competition…

And many others…

Also awesome recommendations, awesome essay and super awesome short answers in my application.

Im still waiting for NYU’s decision haha do you guys think I have a chance?

No. I will say less than 5%
Its depends on which major you applied it for, though.

Well… I got this program also.
I applied for Entrepreneurship, and that is why I got into this program -.- Albeit not applied for it…

My SAT is 2070 and surprisingly my gpa is 3.23… (yep I admit I didn’t study) (My studying hour during entire high-school years had been dwindled by less than 1 hour per day).

Well, which major you applied it for?

For what it is worth, we have a friend that just completed this program - went to Greece - and LOVED it. Ended up with great housing when they returned for Spring semester - kept all their NUin friends and made more friends on campus. NEU is all about the global experience…

Does anyone know more about this program so that they might be able to testify as to which country is best? As far as location, academics, NU.in staff involvement/activities, housing, local’s friendliness, etc?

Thanks everyone!

Yea what are the stats of the people accepted and how does admissions know who to place into this program? Although at first I was skeptical about this program I think it might be a good experience…
My stats btw are
SAT: 2000 (700 M, 660 CR, 640 W)
Class Rank 35/457
ECs -
Varsity XC, Indoor Track, &Outdoor Track for 4 years co captain senior year
200 volunteering hours at hospital
Marching band 4 years, section leader senior year
NHS
Tri - M
World Language Honor Society
Science National Honor Society
Piano for 12 years
and others

I got a 1900 on the SAT and 3.6 UW/4.5 W GPA so I’m border line too.

I feel this program is perfect for me since I can stay on track for my pre-med prerequisites while studying abroad (which is something I planned to do anyway).

Im trying to look at NEU as a university and see if I want to attend it over my other options instead of worrying about the abroad program.

Does anyone know when spots usually fill up?

I would have loved to get in that program… Do you think that the fact that I won’t be 18 before the fall semester starts a direct “no” for th N.U.in program?
