Admitted Student Reception in Santa Monica

We just got home and, as usual, Tulane put on a very professional and warm show for the admitted kids and their parents. When the regional admissions director spoke, he mentioned some information about this year's applications which may or may not have already been reported here on cc. Just in case...

*38,000 (hope my memory serves) applications this year for freshman class
*They will offer just 25% admission
*The average SAT this year is up to a new high: 1370 for CR + M
*80% of admits are in top 10% of their HS class

Thanks madbean. That must be Jeff that spoke. Great information, appreciate your sharing.

We attended that reception as well. Jeff mentioned the precentage of kids that come from the “West” but any idea what percentage come from California? My daughter is on the fence between Tulane and BC. Any input either direction?

Very different schools in almost every way, except that they are both academically very good. Maybe the better (and easier) way to approach this is for you to tell us what she is looking for in a school. Things like the following:

1) Size of school, undergrads (0-2,500; 2,501-10,000; 10,001-20,000; 20,000+)
2) Location (Highly urban, suburban, rural)
3) Geography (are there parts of the country you prefer or some you will not consider)
4) Weather (prefer warm, snow…?)
5) Sports (looking for competitve Div. 1, don’t care…?)
6) Greek scene (thinking about joining, want to avoid even a whiff of it, or in between)
7) If female, are single sex schools an option?
8) Anything else that you might think is important to you personally (you ride horses, like rock climbing, active arts scene, whatever).
9) Not really about atmosphere, but very important. Will you need Financial Aid? Are you hoping for merit scholarships?

Ignore the ones like #1 and #7, those are already answered essentially. Probably #9 is not an issue either since they cost about the same sticker price, but if one school is going to cost a lot more than the other and/or require more loans after FA and scholarships, and if that is an issue, it would be good to know as well. Has she been to visit both?

I know Tulane very well, as you may have gathered, but I also know BC pretty well because it is a popular school here in RI, so I have gotten a lot of feedback about it. Know a number of grads as well.

don’t hold me to it, but i believe i saw a stat that had California at 9%

For the latest freshman class the Pacific West was 10.65%, and certainly the vast majority of those will be from California, so 9% give or take a few tenths sounds right.
