Admitted Students Program in April

Hello!

My daughter and I are planning to attend the Admitted Students Program in April. Her admission letter said that info will be mailed out about the program in March, but as we are coming from Texas, I’d like to make travel arrangements a little sooner than one month prior to the program.

Does anyone know if the program is usually all day both Sunday and Monday? Would it be over in time for us to fly back home Monday evening or would we need a hotel room for Monday night?

Thanks for any help or insight!

Contact Admissions—they were extremely helpful when D (class of '13) went through the college selection process.

From what I remember of last year’s schedule there are more programs and activities on Sunday and on Monday morning/early afternoon. Unless there are major changes you should be able to fly back on Monday evening.
Enjoy your visit!

@MADad I contacted admissions via email, but haven’t received a response. Perhaps later in the week I’ll hear something.

@crepes Thank you! Very helpful!

txserenity–maybe try a phone call, reinforcing that you are in Texas etc? I find it strange that they would not reply promptly to an email, given how attentive they were to us 6 yrs ago.

Best of luck—MHC is an unbelievable place. Of my 3 kids, the MHC grad has the strongest fondness toward her alma mater.

Thanks, @MADad ! I am so excited she is going to MHC. She fell in love with it during our visit. Everyone to whom we’ve spoken (current and former students, current and former parents) have such overwhelmingly positive things to say about the school. It seems to have the perfect combination of academic rigor and a supportive, collaborative environment.

How long do parents usually staying during move in? I’ve never had a child go to college out of state. I am not sure how many days to reserve a hotel room for? It looks like move in for first year students is on a Wednesday.

After D moved in during the morning, there was a picnic on one of the greens for first years and their families. After lunch, she began orientation and we headed home. Granted, we live only 2 hrs away from MHC, not halfway across the country.

Older D went to a small university an 8 hour drive from home. We stayed overnight because they ran a parents orientation concurrent with student orientation the day after move-in. It certainly varies school to school.

A group has been started on Facebook:

Mount Holyoke Parents and Families

Please come over and join! I know that several other schools have pages like this and it’s a great way for parents to share info…especially for those of us who are new!

Hi, we just got the news today that D is admitted! We need to work on the Fin Aid but somehow we will make it work…What are the dates for the program in April? Thanks!

Congrats on your daughter’s acceptance, @beherenow ! The program is April 10-11. I’ll send you a PM about the Facebook page.

We went last year and my daughter was done by noon on Monday - that day it was mainly the option to attend classes and she chose a morning class. Just a heads up - there are very few places to stay in South Hadley so book your room as early as possible!

Thanks, @overwhelmedma ! I’ve booked my room already…and for move in time as well!

When I attended 2 years ago, parents could take a class as well. I sat in on a small gender studies class of about 10 people and was completely included in the discussion. It was very cool and made me wish I was back in college! I don’t know if they are doing that any longer, but if you have the opportunity definitely do it.

That sounds fun! I hope they still offer that.

I mentioned this in another thread - but just to increase the number of people who see it. If you’re flying in and you are able to, it’s better to fly in to Hartford rather than to Boston. It cuts down on transit time from the airport significantly (40 min - 1hr as opposed to 2-3 hours from Boston).

We did not attend the admitted student event. In retrospect, I think it was mistake. If you are coming form outside New England and MHC is your first choice, than you should really try to attend for the entire session and leave a little extra time to explore the surrounding area.

For move in, I’d plan arriving early the day before move in. We liked having some extra time to pick-up last minute supplies and enjoying a “last meal” in northhampton. If possible, obtain a schedule of events for move in day ahead of time and plan accordingly. I would also bring a change of clothes. Move in day 2013 was beastly hot. So after carrying a car full of boxes up to top floor of McGregor, a clean shirt was in order.

The scheulde clearly states what time parents are expected to leave. Because I needed to catch a flight, I left an hour early. I wish that I had stayed the full time and had some room to re-group before traveling. It’s an exciting and emotional day (in a good way). Savor it.

There will almost certainly be an orientation schedule up on the website in advance. You also get your photo for your one-card (student ID, laundry, etc.), so maybe wear a top you like, because that photo is EVERYWHERE (on the board of your major department, on moodle, and obviously on the card itself). I have a terrible photo and I cringe every time I see it on moodle. My parents stuck around to explore the valley for a day after orientation (we’re from far, far away and my dad hadn’t been to western MA at all), and we had coffee right before they left, which worked well for us.
