Hello everybody,

I'm currently a film student at a local community college in Bay Area. So after months since I submitted my application to USC film school, I have logged on their USC Connect website to check my status of application, and it looks like as of today, they're finally done with that stressful process (for both of them and us). I was more than happy to find out I got admitted. The actual mail and booklet are on their way to my place.

Since this is going to be my first time moving away from home to a place I've never lived in, I'd like to connect with other USC film students and the residents who currently reside in LA and work in the industry.

Any useful info on the program and areas to live in LA will be greatly appreciated!

Hi, my answer has nothing to do with this post, but I’m very interested in knowing how you got in. Did you have to take specific classes towards your major or any honors? What do you recommend? Also, which community college around here were you attending? (If you don’t mind me asking). I, too, am a film student at a local community college in the Bay Area looking to transfer to USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. I never thought it was possible, but it gives me a lot of hope to hear that it is! Congratulations, by the way.

Hey!! I transferred to SCA from community college as well and am currently a senior.

Will you have a car when you come down? If yes, and you intend to start interning/working right away I’d recommend West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, or Burbank, as that is where most production companies are located.

If you’d prefer to stick closer to campus, Los Feliz is a good area to look into. However, since you’re just starting, I’d recommend living on/near campus at least for a few semesters until you get into the swing of things. Most of your classmates will be living near campus and even in student housing, so a lot of times student films inevitably get shot on/around campus and it’s easier to help out if you live close by. Plus, if you don’t have a car, lugging your equipment around on public transit is going to be a huge pain (and potentially dangerous).

Specific student housing: Webb, Fluor, and Cardinal Gardens are the closest to SCA if you’re looking for convenience. Tuscany is a bit far but I know quite a few film students live there and it has the best location in terms of nearby restaurants. Student housing is far more expensive than renting an apartment. I’ve never lived in student housing and instead chose to rent an apartment 1-2 blocks off campus each year. If you join any of the USC facebook groups, you can see people subleasing their places. It might be easier to do that if you don’t have a potential roommate in mind. If you do have a roommate, check out some of the bigger leasing companies like Stuho. A lot of stuff comes up if you just search “USC housing.” If you visit, you can also take a look around because places that are looking for residents always have signs with phone numbers you can call to schedule showings. West of campus tends to be cheaper (and better access to public transit) than North and there’s not much in terms of housing on the South or East sides.

Feel free to PM me with any questions about internships, housing, adjusting, etc. I’m more than happy to help! :)
