Admitted to USC film production program as a transfer student

Hello everybody,

I just found out today that I got admitted to their film production program on USC Connect. The actual mail and booklet from USC are on their way to my place.

I created this post to help myself and possibly other prospective/current USC film students/resident living in LA and work in the industry to connect to one another. This is going to be my first time moving away from home to a place I've never lived in, so any info on the film program at USC and areas/neighborhoods in LA would be greatly appreciated!

I was more than happy to find out the admission result today, and I wish you all out there the best of luck if you are still waiting on their decision.

Mi

P.S. I'm coming from Bay Area

Congrats on getting accepted. Can you give us some insight on your application materials/essays?

I also applied as a Trasfer for the Production programs but I’m still waiting to hear from them…

Hello,

I hope you have got some good news by now.

For my application, I prepared the personal statement somewhat at the last minute , but I did gather all of my experiences with traveling, photography, film-making, and community development to put into the required essay.

For my porfolio, I was fortunate to have had a lot of opportunities to go to several of extraordinary events for my personal and collaborative projects (mostly photography), and I kept track of most of them and put them on my porfolio.

For my visual sample, I was pretty worried about it for a while until the last week before deadline, a friend and I came together for an experimental shoot at his studio with little to no hope it would become great, but surprisingly we managed to get a lot of good shots, so I decided to use them for my visual sample.

I’m glad everything worked out for me!

Let me know how it goes for you. Cheers!

First of all, congratulations on threading the needle and getting in. It’s ever more difficult with every passing year, so kudos to you on that one.

I think the two big pieces of advice I’d give you going in would be, especially in production, to 1) crew on as many 480s, 580s, etc. as you can. Those are the major “thesis film” classes in which the university helps underwrite the cost of production and it’s as close to the real thing as you’ll get sort of the actual real deal.

The second thing would be to take advantage of the resources the university has. The cinema library is a fantastic treasure, as are the various lectures put on around town by the various guilds- DGA, WGA, PGA, etc. and the TV and film academies. The other big resource the university has which is fantastic is TrojanVision, which is the university’s student TV station. If you’re inclined, they also have radio - KUSC is the classical music station and KSCR (?) is the web radio.

Any questions, just ask.

I am an incoming freshman at USC and a filmmaker. Thought I’d say hi on this thread! :)

Hey
I am a transfer applicant applaying for this program too. However, I still do not receive the notification. Do they email you or mail something to you to let you know the admission? I check online these days but find nothing updated.
