My dilemma: I have received the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship from Michigan State University, entitling me to free college basically, with paid research and a stipend. However, I've been accepted at numerous other places, not to mention that I am anticipating acceptance at Dartmouth and possibly Cornell. Thing is, paying for college is going to be difficult because my parents refuse to pay a substantial amount of my college tuition. They have also refused to file the FAFSA (not that I would get any money anyway, my parent's income is waaay above the top bracket). My question is, do I go to MSU, or try and figure out something with my parents so I can attend some of the other colleges I've been accepted at?

Intended Major: James Madison College at MSU, or PolSci anywhere else.

Where I've been accepted:

UChicago
Notre Dame
Case Western RU
University of Michigan
MSU
Ohio State
University of Toledo

There is NO dilemma imho. MSU @ E. Lansing - Capital of Michigan IS the correct choice in this case!! UVA’s President Teresa A. Sullivan - Alumna of the James Madison College and later Ph.D from Chicago would have agreed with me!! :)

See, that’s what I’ve been thinking too. I don’t know if prestige should be a factor in my decision though. I keep hearing people tell me how bad State is compared to U of M, and I can’t sort the hype from reality. Not to mention UChicago is a damn attractive option.

Another vote for MSU. James Madison College is a fine choice, and a great deal financially. Do not pay any attention to the prestige w****s. When you graduate from MSU in four years, if you do well there you will very likely have as many options open to you as at the other schools, and will be debt free (which is a more valuable benefit than you can probably realize at this point in time).
Congratulations on the great admits.

p.s. my conclusions would not change if you were admitted to Dartmouth or Cornell, or any other school you could name (I think Chicago is at least as good as any of the schools on your list, although as an alum I undoubtedly have some degree of bias ). Imo, no school is worth $100,000+ more than James Madison College.

That seems like a valid observation. I certainly can appreciate the benefit of going to undergrad for free, letting me save money so I can better afford graduate school. Hmm. I never envisioned myself going to MSU. Curious.

I’m curious as to what w****s is, to be honest. I’ve been racking my mind trying to think of a vulgar term starting with the letter W, lol.

try whrs
Does this help? I don’t like using vulgar terms, but it is a common expression that conveys the intended meaning as well as any.

AH! I see. See, I would never even think of censoring that. I generally consider the big seven to be the vulgar expressions that should be censored. Different strokes, I guess.
