Going into Freshman year at public school i set myself up with very advanced classes: Math Analysis Honors, Chemistry AP, and Spanish 3. Unfortunately i froze up. First semester i got a C in Chem, Math, and Art, and a B in spanish. My GPA was an awful 3.2. This semester I pulled up all my grades, I have all A's except (due to a rocky first couple weeks) for a B in Chem Ap and a borderline B/A in Math (depends on final/ teacher lets me redo an assignment she ADMITS she lost). I also for sure got a 5 on the Chem AP test, im great at multiple choice and I went over the free response questions (they give them back a month later) with a tutor, and i got them almost all right (1 point off out of 40 or so). Next year I will try extremely hard to get straight A's in all my classes, which are all AP except for honors English. I have my eyes set on Stanford of Duke, do you think this year will affect my chances of getting in to either?

This is your first year in high school? It doesn’t help, but you can certainly pull it off.

Assuming you do as well as you think you should for the next three years you’ll be fine. Freshman year, while not “meaningless”, doesn’t carry a whole lot of value and a 3.2 isn’t that bad for a distracted freshman. Esp. w/ all that AP work.

well, you should be happy to know that Stanford doesn’t calculate freshmen grades in the admission process, so that should benefit you. Don’t worry, I’m pretty sure the colleges you apply to will be forgiving.

I agree. Don’t be too stessed out. I practially live near stanford and when I talked to one of thei adcoms, she said, “we’re fine as long as you meet a certain threshold. Mostly A’s and a sprinkling of Bs are usually what’s acceptable” and since they don’t calculate freshmen year… you can breathe buddy
