So I’ve been scouring the web for answers on being an undecided/undeclared major, and they’ve all had the same response- it can be good or bad, but I’ve never had a clear-cut answer. My dad says that if you apply as an undeclared major it’s easier to get admitted into colleges while a family friend told me that going in as an undeclared major would actually make it harder to get into colleges because they would prioritize admitting students with decided majors first. Not just on the basis of getting into colleges, but overall, what are the advantages/disadvantages of being undeclared? What would you choose, and why?
For most schools it doesn’t matter in the least – it is not an advantage nor is it a disadvantage to apply undecided (exceptions being for schools that accept by major and schools that have separate divisions for specific disciplines such as engineering, business, nursing etc.).
Admissions officers fully understand that once a student decides to attend the school that he/she free to change majors. I’ve heard an admission officer say that typically about half of the students apply undecided and of those who apply with a major typically about half of those end up changing majors while at college.
By schools that accept by major, do you mean the amount of students who apply for those majors and how many they can fit in?
