Advantages of giving AP tests

As the header suggests, what are the advantages of giving AP tests? I have heard that if you score above a certain range then you can skip first year of college ( which I dont eant to do), what other Plus points are there and what is the requirwmnts and minimum scores needed?? And why ate they held so late in the year? And is this AP test different from school AP because I have heard in the US universities they ask how many AP courses and stuff you are taking.

Please share whatever you know, cause in my country there is no AP system and I am virtually clueless.

Bumpity Bump Bump!

Depends…most universities accept certain AP exam scores for credit. Some others might not accept APs at all. Main advantage of APs is to prepare you for higher level coursework.

AP scores range from 1 to 5; a 3 or above is usually considered passing (sometimes you’ll need 4 or 5). For example, at MIT, a 4 or 5 on the Calculus BC exam exempts you from 18.01 (single-variable calculus), but MIT does not accept AP Chemistry.

“And why ate they held so late in the year?”
Well if they were held in September when most students are beginning the course there would be problems.

& AP courses are usually just standard HS courses that are more advanced and designed to prepare students for the AP exam. Usually AP courses and other advanced classes are assigned a weighted GPA.
