My daughter is interested in majoring in Advertising. You cannot directly apply to the College of Communication. On the application one has to put down pre-Comm, and then petition in to your desired major Fresh or Soph year.

Is it hard to get admitted as a pre-Comm? If she gets admitted, it is very hard to then petition in to Advertising? I envision a worst case scenario of she gets admitted to UIUC, but is not able to get into her desired major after a year or two.

Her stats:
HS junior
ACT - projected 31 (she takes tomorrow)
GPA - 3.5 W
Rank - around 40% (we hope she can raise both GPA and rank this year)
EC - almost none
OOS at a well respected suburban Saint Louis HS
Mom and Dad are both alum of UIUC (though it won't show on application since we both attended grad school elsewhere)

yeah. Most admits into UIUC from my school has at least a 3.4 and higher Unweighted and at least 3.7 weighted for admission into LAS. bussiness and enginneering much higher. but since she's pre com. than she's probably looking at LAS. illinois usually takes the top 20 percent. so hopefully her GPA and Rank will improve.

Does it actually say Pre-comm on the application now? I know they are changing things, but in the past you applied LAS i believe.

LAS is probably pretty middle 50% stats for admission, maybe slightly higher or lower. If it is indeed "pre-comm" now then i'd guess you won't really find many stats, cause that would be a pretty new development.

the good news...if she gets that 31 she's got a nice shot, that's a good score.

bad news...if not, it looks as if it'l be a bit hard unless she can take some steps to better the GPA
